Capcom Vice President, Christian Svensson, answered a few questions on the Unity Boards about a potential re-release of Street Fighter 3 Third Strike and he also covered one other question that came up.How would I get a hold of Yoshinori Ono to ask him, beg him, for a arcade perfect, downloadable version of Street Fighter 3 Third Strike for the PlayStation 3 and XBox 360?
You guys re-released Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix and Marvel vs Capcom 2, so how about one of the best fighters ever?
Sven: It's not up to Ono-san so you'd be asking the wrong person.
The Capcom USA board would make that decision and such a project is more likely to be championed in our office rather than Japan given recent history (the two other projects you mentioned were championed by me specifically and produced in our our office).
Unfortunately, there's nothing new to discuss on that front at the moment.
Are there any plans for Super Street Fighter 4 Avatar Items/ Awards / Rewards for XBox Live?
Sven: We've got some surprises in store with regard to Street Fighter avatar gear. Stay tuned.

FIRST!
Well I hope they do decide upon it...
It would give me a chance to use my stick on 3rd Strike.
My PS3 is not backwards compatible so I really hope this goes through.

I doubt it very much that they will make 3S in HD. Several resons; 1.they didnt know how much work was needed to make SF2HD and it was delayed several times, they bled and sweated to get it out. 2.SF2 was immensly more popular than 3S...why then make it HD??
Bad business is bad business. This is a company just like everyone else...with people working a regular day job there.

You can play 3rd strike with GGPO on your computer for free. Graphical updates would be much harder than SSF2HDR and don't get me started on balance updates (that would be a nightmare). I for one can get by without a re release for now. Being that I am typing right now proving that I have a computer and can thusly play with GGPO.

3rd Strike I think was a rough game commercially for Capcom. If you look at the drought that followed that game's release, for fighters, it's not a surprise they're not jumping at re-releasing it, IMO.
Posted by Geese on December 28, 2009 at 4:10 p.m. #15
I highly doubt they are not going to re-release it within the next year or so.

Hey people.
After SSF4's dust has settled, we need to start asking for a port of 3s.
It's a forking crime no-one one at Capcom has mentioned bringing it out on 360 or PS3 yet.

Posted by Bruce Leroy on December 28, 2009 at 5:59 p.m. #24
Cormak is right. It's a crime that Third Strike hasn't been ported to the 360 or the Playstation 3. The cats at Capcom USA are on a serious power trip and they want us to beg them to re-release Third Strike. Even though we all know that they would make a small fortune if they did. Me? I already own a Dreamcast with Third Strike and I'm gonna track down the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection for the XBox so I can play other cats online. I'm also going to check out GGPO as well.
I ain't gonna beg Seth or anyone else at Capcom USA for an HD version of Third Strike. They re-release Marvel versus Capcom2 and even Final Fight but Third Strike is a problem? Get outta here..

We don't need no HD update for 3S. HD remix is an insult to the original SF2 series.

SFIII was not really successful. The characters and system never caught on with the general public. There's no financial incentive for them to do this.

game needs no improvement
just port it and sell it for like 10 bucks, many people would buy (me included)
3rd strike is awesome
Posted by Shin-Shu-Sheru-Shoken on December 28, 2009 at 8:18 p.m. #34
It would be great if they re-released 3S. Even if it was a straight arcade port with a few filters like MvC2, that would be fine. Playing on GGPO is great and all but you'd get a much larger player base if it where released on consoles.
Posted by Matches of the Millennium on December 28, 2009 at 8:20 p.m. #35
Third Strike would be good without Backbone developing. Then awaiting a patch that may or may not ever come to fix what was broken in the port from the get go.
CvS2 not feasibly online anymore is a crime.
Posted by ray on December 28, 2009 at 8:38 p.m. #36
i think the game surely deserves a port to 360 and ps3 at the very least. i agree that seth killian and sven always seem to overlook the game when it comes to discussing it but what can you do. i personally thought if sf3 had the kind of roster that sf2 or sfa3 had, it would really be the best sf overall..at least to myself and most people. the thing that keeps people away from sf3 is the unfamiliar chars and fighting system..but the game is so good, it's worth learning in my honest opinion. street fighter 3 port ftw.

Posted by ray on December 28, 2009 at 8:47 p.m. #38
when are sven and seth killian going to give street fighter 3 the respect it deserves? it seems to me that capcom almost ignores the fact they ever came out with a 3rd street fighter. is it me or does that seem to be the case for anyone else?
Posted by my2millioncents on December 28, 2009 at 9:09 p.m. #39
I know what happens here...
As a matter of fact Capcom /did/ lose a lot of money with the SF3 series. And thats why they aren't looking back at it now.
Back in the day doing all those fluid and beautiful sprites alone should have gone over the millions. They wanted to go all out with the next real iteration of the series and they really did.
For their surprise this title wasn't welcomed the way Capcom expected. Why?
It was different.
It introduced the players to new concepts and techniques that were too "complex" to obtain average to high level play status. ( parrys, karas, charge partitioning etc. )
And on top of it, they removed almost all of the original cast on which most us grew up and played with.
Those two reasons prevented Capcom from getting the profit they needed before considering it loss on their financial time frame.
Now the truth is, This game was ahead of its time.
And I explain why:
The game mechanics
While keeping the core basics they experimented with new features that mixed very well with the game rythm. This new features created a new dimension of gameplay which gave the game a whole lot more of depth.
The Cast
It was not based of stereotypes. Again going for something completly fresh and new, they added more interesting and mature characters to the SF universe. One Simple example.. Oro.
A brazillian hermit which isn't japanese that kicks ass to no extent?
The music
While not being iconic like the first series, it kept the mood pretty damn well for a fighing game.
While other companies were emulating or mimicking the synthesized music influence SF had on everyone, this guys were sampling and composing CD quality tracks which was unheard of back then.
The graphics
Do I really need to mention the graphics?
All this elements were too revolutionary for the consumer, who was still used to SF2 and Alpha, and the transition wasn't smooth enough to embrace it.
Closing statement
For me this game stands at the pinacle of the fighting genre. People are slowly but steadly realizing this.
if Capcom re-release this, it will be after every SF4 sequel they are planing.
Again you ask why? Because it will severely compete with their new horse.
As for making a HD version? Try 3d capcom. Posing its cheaper than drawing.
Posted by Kexx on December 28, 2009 at 9:41 p.m. #40
F**k Third Strike, you can still play it online as good as it could possibly be.
But CvS2, now that's a game that needs a PSN XBLA release like MvC2, just with a quick new online mode, all I could ever want.
Posted by Akumous on December 28, 2009 at 9:52 p.m. #41
It's sad a lot of players and novices and just guys who randomly likes to posts messages on here are bashing Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike. It is the game that kept SF alive in many respects. Many might disagree with but ask yourselves one question, which SF game made Diago famous? It wasn't SFII turbo, it was 3rd with that famous video match up between him and Justin Wong when he did that extreme parry come back.
Capcom cannibalized it's own franchise by releasing several SF games. Remember SFIII came out in the mix of SF alpha series, and Vs series, which were more flashier than the game and had a broader appeal. SFIII wasn't a commercial success due to the complications of the engine which made it difficult to be ported to lesser systems like the PSX and Saturn, and there are other variables as well. Did Capcom made back its investment in SFIII, yes I would like to believe that and if it weren't for that game we wouldn't have SFIV. SFIV in many respects, especially its design and mechanics are very reminiscent of SFIII.

#41: "SFIV in many respects, especially its design and mechanics are very reminiscent of SFIII."
Um, how? It was specifically decided to avoid SFIII influence and make it a sequel starting from the final SFII incarnation, both chronologically and in design terms. Nearly all of the SFIII mechanics were ignored.

"One Simple example.. Oro.
A brazillian hermit which isn't japanese that kicks ass to no extent?"
A source of the Udon Eternal Challenge book from 2005, bad translation in some areas but it says his story is that of possibly being Japanese, a long time ago. Sean the only one being Brazilian, and then there's Blanka, formerly Jimmy, landing in Brazil and becoming green thru the jungle environment and who the hell knows.
SFDevotion site stopped the extensive character bios well before Oro though.
3D won't improve 3rd Strike either. See what happened to Turtles in Time changed to 3D as a recent example. And Capcom deciding against the Capcom All Stars 3D game with Haggar and Strider Hiryu, Ingrid, Poison, others. But Oro is still a cool character.
Posted by Go Sven on December 29, 2009 at 1:36 a.m. #49

Lawl @ Capcom USA, anyway. They do nothing. They're like the PR wing of Capcom. All SF's are developed by the Japanese, and even when Capcom USA decides to develop something, they give it to other dev's to do the port.

Capcom should just port the Anniversary Edition version of 3rd Strike from PS2/Xbox to the PS3/360. It couldnt possibly be as hard (or expensive) compared to porting MvC2, considering that was a Dreamcast port. Dont really care about graphics, considering the sprites are still some of the prettiest ever created 10 years later. Use the filters from MvC2 if they want, but spend most of the money on implementing a good online system. Voila, instant money.

Don't get distracted by the amount of pages. It has the same dozen people posting in it most of the time.
There really needs to be a gathering together of 3rd Strike fans from the EU and US to demand a release of the game on 360 and PS3. No HD Remix, just a port like MvC2 with the same filters and some good netcode.
