Capcom's Christian Svensson has visited the Unity Boards once again. This time he talks about a universal FightStick, a Rival Schools re-release and fan feedback.Any chance we'll see a Universal FightStick that works on both the PS3 and XBox 360 in the future? I don't want to see a universal stick come out months after I purchase one for a specific system.
Sven: For licensing reasons, you'll never see a "universal" stick that has official status from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.
There's no plans for a MM stick at this time so buy with confidence. 8)
Once upon a time they used to make universal everything just about. I guess things have changed more than I realized.
Sven: Back in the day, controllers weren't passing encrypted inputs that require specific chips to be in them to handle the authentication and decryption, thus "unofficial' and "universal" sticks were possible.
The "mods" that you're seeing out there, effectively remove legitimate chips from existing licensed controllers and put them in controllers that didn't have that official license, with the ability to switch.
It's good tech, but nothing you'd ever see approved in a "licensed" product, so hacks and mods are the only way for this to exist.
Luckily, our Street Fighter 4 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Tournament Edition sticks were designed to be very mod friendly for users who are interested in customizing their experience.
I'd like a Rival Schools re-release. Any chance we'll see this?
Sven: [...] Unfortunately Rival Schools will not be making an appearance. There are IP clearances and rights we no longer have (particularly pertaining to voicework/soundtrack I believe) so our IP management group has told us it can't be re-released. I'm sorry as it's one of the ones I really wanted to see be put back up.
So if you still have that PS1 Rival Schools disc in your collection, it's unfortunately going to be the only way that gets played for the foreseeable future.
Capcom is a huge multinational game development corporation, not a bunch of cool doodz who are your friends and want your ideas for games. They don't need, or want, suggestions about which games they need to remake.
Sven: Actually, we always like to receive ideas for projects. We more often than not can't act on everything, but we've had suggestions here that have often cemented our thinking about certain potential projects and lead to finished games.
HD Remix and Okami Wii both were pushed forward in such fashions.
