Super Street Fighter 4 developers discuss Cody Azrael has translated the most recent post from the Japanese Super Street Fighter 4 blog. This entry features the developers of the game discussing Cody.

Here's the entire post.

This is Tsukamoto checking in after a long silence!

Continuing on from last week, this week we will also be talking about the new characters. Together with Mr. Okada and Mr. Tamamura, we'd like to talk about Cody this time, and share some of the development secrets from when he was first chosen to be in the game.

First, tell us about how Cody made it into the game.

Okada:
The same as Guy, we heard that Cody is very popular overseas, and to tell you the truth, he was one of the leading candidates for new characters. The Cody we wanted to put in the game was the one from Final Fight, but Alpha 3 Cody is the one that's most popular overseas. When we asked why, the answer was, "We (overseas) like anti-heroes, so that's why we like Cody." So then it became, "Please give us Street Fighter Alpha 3 Cody!" and that's how we decided on putting him in.

I see... but, it would have been nice to see Final Fight Cody again after such a long time.

Okada:
Well, Final Fight Cody has never been in a fighting game, so players would have a much different impression of him. They would probably think, "This isn't Cody!" For that reason, I think it was good to use Alpha as the base. Guy is also based on his Alpha version.

Tsukamoto:
That's true. That bored look, the handcuffs, and the prison garb certainly leave an unforgettable impact, and I liked it. But when I hear the name "Cody", what immediately comes to mind is the Final Fight look - the T-shirt and jeans.

Cody has some fairly unique moves - as developers, did you have any hesitations about adding Street Fighter Alpha 3 Cody into the game?

Okada:
We did. The guy in charge - Mr. Tamamura - had it the roughest I think.

Tamamura:
First off, are we really going to let him use the knife? If we do that's problematic, but if we don't then it's not really Cody. That was one complication.

Okada:
Ever since Final Fight, Cody has been a knife-wielding character and in Street Fighter Alpha 3 he could also pick up and use the knife. For Cody, the knife is a lot like Vega's claw and mask - they're indispensable parts of the character. But even as we understood that, picking up and using things didn't exist in the Street Fighter 4 system, so we had to ask the engineers over and over "Is it really possible?" We came up with a few alternate ideas, such as having Cody pull out the knife from his pocket as he starts the move. So he'd have an unlimited supply of knives in his pockets and then could just do moves normally.

So you were trying to work around picking up the knife and just have him use it.

Okada:
That's right. However, a big part of the strategy fighting against Cody in Street Fighter Alpha 3 was positioning in relation to the knife, as well as what to do against him once he got it, and that would have been lost. As one of Cody's special moves, the knife can't be that strong, but the idea of keeping it away from him is part of the game. So ultimately, we decided to bring the character over as-is, which includes picking up the knife.

That will make the Street Fighter Alpha 3 fans pretty happy! Are knife special moves strong this time around?

Okada:
Yes, basically if he gets the knife he becomes stronger. But in exchange for that it can be difficult to pick up the knife, as the opponent will be working to keep him away from it. So I feel that this makes the knife pretty interesting and we took care in this regard.

Tamamura:
As the knife causes chip (block) damage, he can put on pressure once he's picked it up. However, giving him advantages only would be too good, so once he has it there will be some special moves that he won't be able to do anymore.

Tsukamoto:
Also, once he takes a hit he drops it (laughs).

Tamamura:
That's right, so there is a different feeling of nervousness the player will feel from before picking up the knife and after.

The knife certainly does seem powerful. Were there any other difficulties?

Tamamura:
Cody has a type of recovery very specific to him, a counter-attack move from when he's down.

Tsukamoto:
The Bad Spray. That's a system that no other characters have.

Tamamura:
He's definitely a character against whom you'll need very specific strategies. (laughs)

Speaking of the knife and handcuffs, can you tell us about Cody's abilities this time around?

Okada:
In Street Fighter Alpha 3, as the prisoner setting was new for him, it made Cody sort of like an original character. Original characters can be a bit difficult to use, so I felt that he was a character more suited for advanced players - you needed to be fairly good in order to enjoy using him. So it was a little difficult recreating the joy of using Cody in Super Street Fighter 4. Since Street Fighter 4 doesn't have original characters.

So then, do you feel that the way players will fight with Cody has inevitably changed in Super Street Fighter 4?

Tamamura:
It's probably changed quite a bit from Street Fighter Alpha 3. His special moves in Alpha 3 didn't really link (combo?) together very well, but this time they do.

Do you feel that he's become a bit more beginner/intermediate player friendly?

Okada:
He can do some of what the other characters can do, sure. But he's not as all-purpose as, say, Ryu, and not easy to use. We weren't looking to make him easy to use because he was difficult the last time around. We wanted to emphasize the interesting feel in the middle of the stoic play.

Tamamura:
Cody is kind of like a jack of all trades. He's got strong throws and he can rush down, but he doesn't particularly excel in one category. I don't think he's really a character where he has one main thing that he can fall back on. He's got a good rounded set of moves, but nothing to the point where you would say, "I just have to use this."

Okada:
So by that, he's still an advanced character. We have opened him up just a little, so people who have never used him before will still be able to play him and enjoy, but compared to other characters it'll be a lot easier to hit a wall I think.

Are there any other characters with similar fighting styles to Cody?

Okada:
Hmm.... that really depends on the situation. Up close he can really apply the pressure like M. Bison, but from a distance, with his projectile he can be used a bit like Ryu and his fireball.

Tamamura:
When he gets the knife, his reach extends, so like Vega he can chip away at your damage from a distance.

Okada:
The style can fluctuate pretty wildly, and this is part of what makes Cody unique. He's got various different parts, and you put those together and fight in your own way...

In that regard, it seems like Cody is suited for those who like to use multiple characters.

Okada:
Yes, for those who like to use different characters as the situation calls for it, I feel that Cody will be interesting for them. However, for those who don't think that way, maybe Cody is a bit difficult.

Tsukamoto:
Cody is a character who's fighting style will change based on the player's understanding on his moves.

Okada:
The players who use him will come up with their own ways to use and enjoy him.

Tsukamoto:
I want to see how skillful players use him. I'll be looking forward to the Replay Channel!

Did he gain or lose any moves in Super Street Fighter 4?

Tamamura:
He didn't lose any moves. But he's got a lot more motions now. In the past, some of his far and close motions were the same, and there wasn't any difference when he did attacks with the knife. But we rode the designers a little a got them to make more distinctions.

Tsukamoto:
Including Cody, we've managed to get the Alpha characters in the game without making compromises! When I saw them in the game, I felt that they blended right in with the Street Fighter 4 cast, so I thought that the players would definitely be happy with them!

Tamamura:
We also studied Cody in Street Fighter Alpha 3 Double Upper for the PlayStation Portable, and in that game he got a new move. So in that spirit, we felt like we should also give him a new move in this game (laughs). Its a completely new move called the Zonk Knuckle. You do it by holding the button down, similar to the turn punch.

Okada:
This time around Cody has good punches, so his normal moves are quite strong. Medium Punch for anti-air, Hard Punch for baiting, and Light Punches for Canceling. But for the Zonk Knuckle that Tamamura mentioned, you have to hold down one of those buttons to do it, so you lose that function. Do you sacrifice anti-air or feints? Its a risk/reward move, so I feel its pretty interesting.

Tamamura:
Also, there were some moves we wanted to put in that we couldn't. In Street Fighter Alpha 3, depending on the ISM, Cody wouldn't block but dodge. He'd sort of bend his upper body away. We wanted to put that, as well as counters, in the game...

Okada:
We actually did get them in the game, but when testing it out we felt that it was too strong, so it was taken out. We thought we'd taken it out, but when we were first doing adjustments we found the CPU could still do it. Using Ryu, we'd do a blocked jump in attack, Crouching Hard Punch into Fireball, but then CPU Cody would dodge the projectile. Then after dodging he could just punch Ryu. We thought, that's a totally different game! (laughs) It was way too strong.

Tsukamoto:
As it didn't really fit with Street Fighter 4's system, we got rid of it, but there were those who said "it's pretty cool, so leave it in!" So we were half happy, half regretful about it.

Were there any problems during implementation?

Tamamura:
We mentioned this before, but the handcuffs and chains, and the knife were the most difficult. It required some special work that was exclusive to Cody.

Okada:
There are other characters who required some special work, but Cody's was the most obvious. When a problem arose we'd have to bring in all of the appropriate staff. The engineers made a new system, and the planning department would fix the play style, the designers would work on the art, that kind of thing. He wasn't a particularly straightforward character to develop, so in a lot of ways he required the most effort.

Tamamura:
Speaking of, in a Cody mirror match, if both went to pick up the knife at the same time, even though there was only 1 knife both Cody's would go into their knife-holding pose. The Cody who didn't have the knife would still act as if he did.

Tsukamoto:
Air knife! (laughs)

Tamamura:
In some ways, seeing stubborn Cody was pretty interesting. (laughs) For the Cody that doesn't get the knife, we added some expressions to properly show that he didn't get the knife.

Tsukamoto:
When he doesn't get it, he gets a surprised face as if to say "Aw crap!"

Tell us about the current progress in development.

Okada:
We've pretty much got the play style down, so now we're just tweaking him. We've tackled most of the big problems concerning the artwork as well, so it took a little while but we're finally starting to see the finish line.

How about a message to those looking forward to using Cody?

Tamamura:
Cody isn't just about the knife - he's also got a wrench and a pipe - stuff that takes you back to Final Fight. So please take note of those. Also, he has the most attack motions in Super Street Fighter 4, so I hope everyone takes advantage of them.

Okada:
As it will be up to everyone to create the play style - well, I'm sure eventually one will stand out - but its all up to you, so I believe this is part of Cody's charm. For other characters, you only need to learn one way to fight. Then from there, its a matter of polishing your skills. But for Cody, you can start out with one way, but when that doesn't work you can switch to another. This way you learn several different fighting styles and can combine them together and become stronger. I feel this way of leveling up is pretty interesting, so I hope everyone enjoys it.

Tsukamoto:
I want to level up!

Okada:
And you can. It will take a lot of practice though.

Tsukamoto:
Alright, I've decided on Cody as my main.

... Man, I gotta practice.

So, I hope you all enjoyed this week. There's still plenty I'd love to talk about, but this time we've got to wrap it up here. Next week we'll be getting to Adon, and I know you all have been anxious about him! He's pretty nice... those moves, and that voice!

Well then, see you next week!

It's sad that Cody doesn't have his v-ism dodge but I understand why they took it out. I still look forward to using him though.

Good info on Cody.
Can't wait to hear about Adon.

I never played The Alpha series, ironically I main Rose, so I guess Cody is starting to look cool. I guess I will try him out once I get the game.

Also, I noticed he has a counter move. Just like the Rumor list predicted!

Lol, I am not trying to start anything but call me crazy or gullible but I am starting to believe the list more and more.

Posted by qer on December 7, 2009 at 10:39 p.m. #13

Not too much of a fan of the knife gimmick, nor claw's mask/claw falling off. The wake-up move sounds interesting though.

Posted by David on December 7, 2009 at 10:43 p.m. #14

What new move did Cody get in SFA3Max for the PSP?

After reading that blog entry it's almost impossible to believe that Cody won't get his jeans and t-shirt look from Final Fight was his alternate costume.

Here's hoping...!!!

...AS his alternate costume.

Honda, T. Hawk, now Cody... If Dudley is announced I'm going to have trouble picking a main for EVO. What a bittersweet fate :P

"he's also got a wrench and a pipe."
now that's interesting.

but the one thing i do like about cody is his dirty fighting style. cant get get dirtier than him throwin dirt in your face while getting up. smackin you with pipes, wrenches, and shankin you with a knife. like guile told ken in the 2V series, "theres no rules in a street fight". lol.

What ryu got dodged and hit on a jumpin?!! Its too powerful take it out.

He should have his dodge personally. Would be a nice change of pace.

"Well, Final Fight Cody has never been in a fighting game"

..uuhh, Final Fight Revenge? I know is a crappy fighting game, but is a fighting game anyways.

"When he gets the knife, his reach extends, so like Vega he can chip away at your damage from a distance."

Does claw Vega chip damage now with standars? O_o

I've been dying to have cody in this game and now he's in. Yes! Sounds like he's going to be a challenge to master, can't wait.

Posted by skid5jack on December 8, 2009 at 2:53 a.m. #35

After reading this I am really excited about Cody. I couldn't get to grips with him in Alpha but seeing the damage other playas could do I can't wait. Glad he has got some new moves as well.
That list looks more a cert each week. If capcom keep us waiting till march (like on the previous post) I will be pi$$ed !!!

Posted by new move on December 8, 2009 at 3:16 a.m. #36

sounds like the new move might be is overhead punch. if you play the street fighter anthology on ps2, cody has a forward fp that hits over head. bet thats one new move.

Posted by Dafro1989 on December 8, 2009 at 3:33 a.m. #37

Cody is going to be a potential beast. Chip damage with standards when knife wielding? A turtle Cody with his knife could cause some problems! Every week gets me more hyped for SSFIV.
Might really have to learn more then one character now, maybe two more!

Posted by Megatonbeef on December 8, 2009 at 3:54 a.m. #38

So happy to hear Cody is a very flexible character, many fighters have to depend on just zoning or rushing or turtling to fight and lack versatility. Finally someone who can fight however the situation demands him to.

Posted by Travers on December 8, 2009 at 5:17 a.m. #39

Thank god they finally decided to use his sfa3 outfit...
If they had used the outfit from FF, most people wouldn't even recognize him.
FF wasn't even a fighting game.

Posted by tuz on December 8, 2009 at 5:23 a.m. #40

man he didnt say ff is no fight game, he said it the cody from ff was not in an other fighting game except from finalfight and no one would recognize him as the cody they were used to, so they took cody from a3.

Posted by Real Cody on December 8, 2009 at 5:34 a.m. #41

To me, Final Fight Cody is the real Cody... This one is lame... :(

imagine if cody still have his bad stone or fake throw which they didn't talk about in this post

i could see how it would match up against a hadouken lol

i'm like a little pebble/rock trade hits with a hadouken lol

must be a special stone (laughs)

at least the knife is cool

can't wait to play with him lol this is going to be fun since alpha

Posted by J.P on December 8, 2009 at 6:05 a.m. #44

I'm glad Cody doesn't have his dodge. This isn't KOF. V-Cody was real annoying to fight with that dodge, because most players would just mash down-back and dodge literally everything thrown at them, giving Cody a huge edge with counter hits, especially when combined with the custom combo.

Posted by ED on December 8, 2009 at 6:31 a.m. #45

Too bad there's no dodge. I was hoping they could have worked around it.

Posted by awesome and mad on December 8, 2009 at 7:40 a.m. #49

This was yet another great chat with the developers that shed a lot of light on what to expect, but I can't help but remember the staggering amount of people who should be eating humble pie or writing letters/sending emails to capcom instead of using a comment system on what is essentially a news site not run by capcom.

Asking for characters here won't do anything but attract trolls. Saying why they have to be in only makes it worse. Someone who has played SF a lot will either point out why they think it seems foolish/redundant and then a long list on unrelated comments begins. Also acting like you know the future like our great friend Rumor list will fail you comes off 2 ways. You are telling us with absolute certainty that we are wrong for being certain about a list being right. Blind faith to counter blind faith. Every time he posts if you flip a few words it shows how he could be wrong too. Nobody knows how the game will come out, but we do know a certain list has a pretty good score right now even if everything on it doesn't make it.

So lets clean up this site and cut down on the trolling, bickering about questions that can't be answered, and really long posts (like mine) that have to simplify matters so everyone else can enjoy thought provoking comments like #32 noticing how this may be either a slip of words or evidence that Vega will be chipping you a lot more than usual.

I read the above text bomb, but will state Sodom had a knock down counter move in his run on his weapons. The same type of attack as the Cody Sand Throw/Bad Spray. So if they ever want to bring back Sodom for a 3rd version after Super 4, they could use their old work and have somebody else in the game with that kinda move. :D

Fan request only again, Alex too, so they can Powerbomb back and forth, and powerbomb the giants like Zangief and Hawk to let them get a piece of their own medicine too.

And stop completely sometimes (Machine Gun mash screaming - unless you were just trolled by a copycat name).

That was just to tell the example character being used, it would have posed a problem for everybody if it remained in the game. Dudes always "making mountains out of mole hills" and trying to read not just "inbetween the lines" but seeing lines they made up on their own that aren't there.

i hope they give him an ultra set-up

Posted by DR Jam on December 8, 2009 at 9:14 a.m. #63

thx for the post,
I like it how Cody's playstyle(s) seams to offer something fresh to the SF4 cast.
It's good to know that he's not just a new face on the table; for that alone I'm actually more excited to play him than ever before.
Back in SF@3, he felt like a generic brawler, he looked cool, but his gameplay was just average.

Posted by Jaf on December 8, 2009 at 9:23 a.m. #64

So wait, Cody has even more moves than Gen? Having to invest time in a character...is my kind of character

Posted by musti on December 8, 2009 at 9:28 a.m. #65

cody needs a good ultra-setup and his dodge should be in the game, at least for dodging fireballs.

Posted by Heh #64 on December 8, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. #66

Good thing there were no tier list pages for that Alpha 3 widely known/distributed/screamed about and then everyone picks the top characters trying for an "easy win button".

You would be surprised how far up Cody is in the game you thought he was only average.

Posted by Hrm on December 8, 2009 at 9:58 a.m. #67

I was kinda let down when I read that one hit would still make him lose the knife, which in my mind meant the knife would probably be as useless as it was in alpha 3, but unless I'm misunderstanding the article, it sounds like he's going to have knife specials, as well as certain specials becoming unavailable while using the knife.
Depending on how good those specials are, that might make picking the knife up worthwhile.

Posted by depth good on December 8, 2009 at 10:01 a.m. #68

i'm interested to see the changes made to the existing characters. would kind of suck if these new characters were so good and deep while the old ones are simple.

look at all this people that never even played cody saying there going to use him now, man i hate that i hope his extremely hard to use i dont want him 2 b the new ryu, that would suck he was my fav in alpha 3 and wit the vsims he was a beast just jugle a character till he got kod lol

Posted by IrPanda on December 8, 2009 at 11:23 a.m. #72

@dainier
Don't worry they say he would be a bit difficult to play with well and most people who play this game suck lol. So i wouldn't worry.

@scrubslol

Obvious troll is obvious. Get more practice, kid.

OT: Cody's looking great. I never played him that much in Alpha 3, but I always liked the character, and he had some cool moves.

I'm just hoping that Makoto makes it in, because her personality would fit right in with the rest of the cast.

But I wonder how they'll handle SF3 characters. That is, will they give them new moves? If so, what happened between SSF4 and 3S that made them forget the moves?

Posted by Hrm on December 8, 2009 at 11:58 a.m. #74

@Killbot: It's like how did Ryu forget Shinku-Tatsumakisenpukyaku between SFA and SF2, or how did Ken forget Shinryuken. Short answer: it doesn't really matter.

i am so happy to see cody in this game. after maining him in alpha 3 when i was younger i grew attched to him. especially hearing that he's a very flexible charcter is neat. I wish they they added karin and r mika into this game. r mika especially since shes the only only female wrestler and karin so that sakura can have her rival back. but then again, the street fighter 3 cast needs to shine too. it would be interssting to see remy in this game just to see how his story would work out. cant wait for adon

i was wondering the same thing...o_O

Posted by Garuda on December 8, 2009 at 1:50 p.m. #80

3rd version -IS- a possibility, but I don't think they'll release it just a year after console like they're doing with SSFIV.

Posted by zilch on December 8, 2009 at 3:13 p.m. #81

Couldn't they have just made the dodge like dhalsim's dodge or vega's flip? Even blanka has a unique evasive move with his low crouch. What cheapos!

Posted by i'm going to love on December 8, 2009 at 3:42 p.m. #82

messing up on his moves with this easy imput.
=/

Posted by improve cody on December 8, 2009 at 4:31 p.m. #83

they should have his ultra do sumthin with his chains..like strangle a nukka and slammin him to the pavement.

Posted by @Garuda on December 8, 2009 at 4:33 p.m. #84

I dont care i dont want one XD this one is fine

Posted by paizurisan on December 8, 2009 at 6:59 p.m. #85

All I saw was they took out his dodge because it makes Ryu look weak!!!

Posted by musti on December 8, 2009 at 6:59 p.m. #86

i hoper they use the chains for his throw, so he strangles them and then they go down to earth.

Posted by blackgenma on December 8, 2009 at 9:02 p.m. #87

a wrench and a pipe?

interesting.

I wonder how the Zonk punch works...

Lets hope he has his final fight outfit. FREE CODY!

Posted by Glenn Beck SRK on December 8, 2009 at 11:52 p.m. #89

...ZOOOONK KNUCKLE...this will become the new catch-"word" in the street fighter world overtaking shoyuken...I can already see it zonkknuckle dot com, which will trump SRK, and become the new home frame data elitists and nostalgic arcade nerds...gaaahhhh

Posted by Smorgasboard on December 9, 2009 at 12:11 a.m. #90

Meh. If they took out the dodge because it make Guile looked weak, someone will still complain.

Posted by kara on December 9, 2009 at 1:17 a.m. #91

listen to you idiots, if cody has dodge focus atck will definitely become obsolete

Posted by baz on December 9, 2009 at 1:43 a.m. #92

Knife, wrench, ..... and what ...kind of PIPE?????

He will be the premier stoner druggy character, cuz he was such a drug addict in final fight for the xbox that you couldn't even play as him. His Ultra should be him shooting up and then stabbing the other player with the used needle.

(drug addict can't dodge!)

good read

Posted by Duh on December 9, 2009 at 5:27 a.m. #94

Cody's ultra should be character specific to the ladies so he can mangle them have his way with them and then go back to jail!

Posted by daga on December 9, 2009 at 5:53 a.m. #95

duh ur sik.

btw, zonk was a gameshow in germany :-)

http://www.fightersgeneration.com/cha...

A link for all you fools who have this idea that Cody's outfit was ever any more baggy than his SSF4 incarnation.

Posted by @ So-So on December 10, 2009 at 7:09 a.m. #98

Cool, then if im a fool then u must be a old fat, man boobs having scum bag thats only achievement ever in life was to make love to a card board cut out of Rosie O'Donnell.

Posted by Me on December 10, 2009 at 10:21 a.m. #99

The biggest thing I'm interested is... about the pipe and wrench. I hope they will be lying on the ground like the knife cuz having Cody randomly pulling tem out of his ass for some moves would be stupid

Posted by Ewe on December 11, 2009 at 12:01 p.m. #100

Yeah, I'm sure Cody pulled enough pipe out of his ass in prison.

Posted by @64 on December 11, 2009 at 6:14 p.m. #101

Gen may appear to have lots of moves at first, but really, he doesn't. He has two styles, but both of them lack close attacks, command normals and neutral aerials. Characters like Chun Li and Blanka should come really close to him, and Dhalsim might have even more attacks.
