Super Battle Opera SF4 results and thoughts
The Street Fighter IV portion of Super Battle Opera 2009 has ended, you can view the bracket results in this image file below.

Click image for a much larger version
Some notes:
- All of the American teams were knocked out in the first round of the competition. These teams were Justin Wong/Marn, Alex Valle/Peter "Combofiend" Rosas and Ryan "Fubarduck" Harvey/Jonlo.
- The final 4 characters were mostly of the mid- to low-tier variety, with the exception of Rufus. The other 3 characters played were C. Viper, Dhalsim and Abel.
- There were many teams that were unconventional. You saw combinations like Honda/Rufus, Sagat/Chun Li, Abel/Dhalsim, M. Bison/Viper, etc.
- Several readers have stated they don't feel that a single elimination style is the best format for a tournament like this.
Rufus: 8
Akuma: 7
Ryu: 7
C. Viper: 4
Blanka: 4
E. Honda: 3
Zangief: 3
Chun-Li: 3
Dhalsim: 3
Abel: 3
Guile: 2
Ken: 2
Balrog (Boxer): 2
Vega (Claw): 1
M. Bison (Dictator): 1
Shiozawa Cup Results — SFIV 5 on 5 Tournament
1st place: Team Neko Punch: Daigo (Ryu), Iyo (Dhalsim), Nyan (Ryu), Misse (Akuma), Bonchan (Sagat).
2nd place: VF High Motivation: Itabashi Zangief (Zangief), Koedo (Sagat), Fuu (Ryu), Sutoraikun (Ken), Yoru no Teramachi Zangief (Sagat).
3rd place: Sakamoto Shosa Wa Ore ga Mamoru: Mahoshojo Zangitan (Zangief), FAX Gimoto (Blanka), Darui (Dhalsim), Yuru (Ryu), Sakamoto Shosa (Sagat).
Team USA (Let's Go Justin) drama
Some big time drama happened with Team USA — Let's Go Justin — which features the players Justin Wong (Balrog), Marn (Viper), Jangief (Zangief), Ricky Ortiz (Rufus), fLoE (Sagat) against team Gachi Muchiri Revenger, who has Potemkin (Sagat), Namameso (Honda), AC Revenger (Abel), Aloha (Zangief), FZ (Viper).
Jangief didn't end up on the team, and was subbed in Arturo "Sabin" Sanchez who played Dhalsim. Marn stated this was cleared by the tournament organizer and the match kicked off.
Marn opened things up playing Viper and beat Aloha and FZ. Marn then lost to Namameso. Arturo (Dhalsim) played next and beat Namameso's Honda, and then things got bad. Since there wasn't a translator there, the exact details aren't known, but apparently there's a rule that states you cannot switch out players/characters without properly informing the other team.
The match was reset even though the American players had defeated three members from Gachi Muchiri Revenger. Team Justin beat the first player after the reset, but Aloha's Gief bounced back and beat all 5 American players.
One of the big things people complained about here is that team Gachi Muchiri Revenger didn't raise an argument until after their Honda player had lost. Also, since SBO is held in Japan each year, the language barrier is going to present some problems unless there are some great translators on hand, so it was probably not the easiest situation to handle.
Regardless, some people felt like team Let's Go Justin didn't get a fair shake, and it's really unfortunate that things didn't play out without any controversy.
Other notes:
- Iyo (Dhalsim) beat the whole VF High Motivation team by himself.
- Mago (Sagat) eliminated the Taiwan Pimp! team single-handedly, beating Eric Zato918 (Akuma), Rei leiccc (Boxer), Rockpon (Sagat), RB (Rufus), Gamer Bee (Akuma).

I just hope people stop BIT*HING about Sagat only one Sagat made it at SBO and the Sagats didn't get far either. And please. XBLA and PSN dose not count so don't bring the up Learn the game and the match up and you will be ok.
There is nothing wrong with Sagat. So you new scrubs who just picked up Street Fighter the Decade need to stop crying and take your lose like a man.
Been in the Street Fighter Scene sense 1991 Arcade and SNES and you don't here me Bit*hin.

I predicted all US players won't pass 1st round. and Daigo won't win SBO. long story short Japan just have too many good players.

yay, incoming more noobs making more stupid comments hating on someone they dont even know. so awesome. jw/marn matches were close, they didnt get raped.
what harmonaz said a year or 2 ago was so true, these ppl put so much time and effort to represent your country, its freakin hard to get into there tournaments and hard to win.(even daigo didnt make top 4). they go in, they do their best and lose, and what support do these guys get from you ppl?
"lawl, jwong and marn lost first round. what a couple of retard losers."
"Hahah american teams got raped"
.......
hell even the post dont gives these guys any props at all either. "All of the American teams were knocked out in the first round of the competition."
the one that harmonaz talked about that time was a youtube video titled something like "us team get beasted", just disrespected the whole us team. its just freakin gay what ppl do, like u guys r better then these players

All the haters, go #$^%(*& yourselves. I don't see any of you qualify for SBO. At least Justin and Marn made it to Japan. Beside bi*ching about them, what else can you guys do? How about put your money where your mouth is: go try out for SBO next year.

Anyone else think it's impressive that the team of Virtua Fighter players took second place in the Shiozawa Cup 5v5 SF4 tournament?

Awesome, 3 of the new characters made the top 4

We'll get them next year!
I think Justin needs to partner with someone a bit more skilled like Ed Ma or Ken I. Marn is good but just not at the elite level. I know there's this whole east coast vs west coast but for SBO they should put that BS aside and combine their strength.

I love that Team KOF won the SBO tourney. It makes me smile. It also shows how random SBO can be.
I also don't know if single elim is the best way to go for a tournament like this. But theyhave been putting it on like this for a long time so I doubt that the format will change.
Posted by haha daigo on August 14, 2009 at 9:27 p.m. #19
man does daigo suck against vipers or what.
i dont think we will see his name at the top of the list that much any more.

wth did Wong pick Dictator? What?!? He wanted to surprise the Japanese like he did with Boxer against Diago? No wonder he lose.
Posted by @LOL on August 14, 2009 at 9:46 p.m. #21
you dumbass he picked Balrog (USA) aka M.Bison (JAP) or to put it simple for your rtard brain he basically picked Boxer.

Itabashi Zangief and Fuudo are also very well known SF4-players. I've seen them play tournaments on Youtube.
I didn't know that Itabashi Zangief was a Virtua Fighter player until i saw the results from SBO last year where he was on the winning VF5-team.
Posted by SSJ3X on August 14, 2009 at 9:49 p.m. #23
@LOL
You have to remember the list of people on that bracket are the Japanese names, so although it says Justin picked M.Bison, in Japan M.Bison's the Boxer, in America, he's Balrog.
This the name set up to let you know.
In Japan, Balrog Is Vega (America)
In Japan, Vega Is Bison (America)
In Japan, Bison Is Balrog (America)

Americans having a lot of trouble in SBO, I see. I also didn't expect Daigo to lose, but stuff happens.
I really wanted Shiro and Iyo to win... rats.
I also think that it should be double elimination. It's just too harsh of a system.

I don't think you'll see many, if any vids for SBO. They usually sell a DVD after the fact, and I believe cameras aren't allowed at these events, but the 5 on 5 might be a different story.
As far as how big compared to Evo. Evo 2009 had over 1,000 people in their SF4 tournament, I think SBO had 64 people in their SF4 tournament, but you have to get an invite or win a qualifier or something to get into SBO.
You can get into Evo if you're willing to put in the entrance fee, it's open to everyone.

"Several readers have stated they don't feel that a single elimination style is the best format for a tournament like this."
When you go jp, you follow jp rules.
just like the jp players came to EVO and they allowed EVO rules.
E.G. 1) allow to counter pick freely
2) console character allowed.
Daigo still sucked it up and won EVO?
how about USA?

First,it sucks that the US got peace out in the 1st round those really practice for it. Second, single elimination isn't new in SBO...Hey guess what is also single elimination? NFL Playoffs.....and that didn't keep it from being America's number 1 sport.
As for JWong and even Marn hate him or not. That guy went to france to qualify then went to Japan to practice then went back for the tourney..that deserves some respect.

It more like the americans were used as warm ups for the Japanese.
Posted by brenttiscool on August 15, 2009 at 2:55 a.m. #47
I agree that US would stand a better chance if we didn't stick so strictly with this east coast west coast bs. Its fine when we are here, but when we are over somewhere else, we need to get past that and combine forces. Ed Ma should have totally been on the US 5v5 team but of course this coast nonsense prevented it.
Posted by ben on August 15, 2009 at 3:12 a.m. #48
Players have to come from somewhere else, so no real embarrassment from "KoF" players winning SBO, since they clearly are playing SF4 and have been for a while. Unless you're one of those Capcom fanboys that for some reason, hate non-Capcom games with a passion and make threads about how bad they are.
Either way, this identity politics stuff is just plain dumb, especially from Americans. Looking at it as countries playing rather than players playing just causes unnecessary hate, egos get bruised, and then you just see racist stuff being thrown around afterwards. It's not just Japan that's annoyed, it's everyone else. Europe gets its SBO slots jacked, Americans say "chillax, it's about the best players, not countries" then chant "USA USA" when tournament time comes. Puerto Rican does well in Evo with America's poster boy character Boxer, then all of a sudden people remember Puerto Rico is a US territory and act like the US has good boxers when neither Keno or Gootecks broke top 8 and Justin didn't even use him until he was in the finals. It just looks embarrassing.

Ojisan and Tokido also lost in the first round to a team that qualified the day of the event. Claw/Ryu.
Uryo's team lost in round 2 to the winning team.
Lots of popular teams lost in round 3, and Daigo's team didn't make it to the top 4.
They all suck, right?

Posted by Jaded_Dragon on August 15, 2009 at 6:16 a.m. #57
Ok... time to reply to Mr/Mrs STOP CRYING, cause... I mean wow, that was just retarded.
You know,when the designer of the game admits that a character is more powerful than they planned on designing him to be, that there is in fact a problem. You can also look a couple of facts;
1) 11 players used Sagat, 3 more than any other character
2) The top 2 players in Japan (via BP in the arcade) use Sagat
A final item that I wouldn't call fact is that a large majority of players use Sagat online as well.
Yes, you can make the whole "learn to stop being a scrub" argument. The problem is that you have to be moderately skilled to be a completely unskilled Sagat players. I am by no means highly skilled. I have no issues with losing, I never rage quit even though my win percentage across all my online fighters (MvC2, SFIV, HDremix, BlazBlue) only sits at about 25% (BB is my best game btw), but playing 7-8 Sagats straight is annoying. I takes the fun out of playing.
Oh and if you want to make an argument and call out a good number of people, you may want to think about 2 things;
1) Don't come off like a 10 year old child, especially when you say that you've been playing since '91. I don't believe you simply based on how you communicate.
2) Please, I beg of you...use a punctuation and spell check. Hard to make your argument sound valid when you come off looking like an idiot.
Oh and on a side note, people should stop making fun of the American teams. Japan has been playing these games at a high level for a long time. Given that most of you would get DPed (Double perfect for those with a sick mind) by any of these teams, I would think it would be best to put up or shut up. Go challenge Justin Wong, or any of the other guys... let me know how that works out for you...
/end rant

I'm really surprised the entire USA team got beat by one Japanese Zangief. Marn and Ricky Ortiz are excused since it's a really bad matchup for them but Justin's Boxer is solid. His normal moves could have kept Gief away. Sucks about the drama but when one guy O.C.V.'s your team, kinda hard to defend your stance that you had a chance despite the drama
Posted by shagy on August 15, 2009 at 7:02 a.m. #63
Its because of the americans that the rumours of Sagat being overpowered even started and now has blown over proportion. So out proportion that even the producers of street fighter have to make an annoucement about it. Nowdays when anyone faces a sagat online, the first thing that comes to their mind is either 'Im screwed' or 'scrub'.
Im pretty damn sure that this doesnt occur in Japan. The SBO results clearly show you that a Sagat player has to be good (Eg, Mago) to even make it far. Even in EVO, none of the sagat players made it to the TOP 8 (I tink except Iloveyoujoe). Hes just any other character in SF4, its just how you play him that determines hes tier.
So all those scrubs who hates sagat players..please shut the hell up for the last time

I guess we just have to face to facts. Our best couldn't get out of the first round.
SBO is OBVIOUSLY the tournament of tournaments when it comes to SF. Unless there's people hiding somewhere in France that are awesome.
EVO is better advertised and it is OUR tournament. But when someone who loses in the 3rd round in Japan, comes and beats our first place guy, its time for people to admit (like a lot of ppl here have) the vast divide btwn the US and Japan. I don't think there is any question we own in MvC2, it's time for some of the ppl here to realize US is just nothing compared to Japan in SF.

Posted by geodude on August 15, 2009 at 9:24 a.m. #69
what can you expect out of the American teams? this just means we as a community need to step it up. its like world cup soccer versus MLS (american league soccer) - our best cannot get better when playing lower skilled opponents left and right.
you are walking straight into an ambush-like setting thinking you can go up against japanese pros in single elimination. there is no time to react and change strategies, so you must rely on a highly offensive strategy, which is only half the battle in street fighter.
Posted by Mak on August 15, 2009 at 9:28 a.m. #70
America just has to accept the fact that they will never be better than japan in any game where japanese players sit at the arcade all day and have access to playing against the best of the best.
peace out.
Posted by Chris Vega on August 15, 2009 at 10:01 a.m. #71
We have very good street fighter players in this country but go to japan where there is an arcade on almost every other corner and their countries best players are playing each other all day everyday what do you expect but a first round loss for our countries best players. And finally everyone should now see that sagat is garbage. He's just overly strong but not unbeatable

Post number 4 needs to shutup. The fact that alot of sagat players have less talent doesn't say anything about the tools the character itself has. People know the matchup...durr, that once again doesn't say anything about the tools the character has.
Low tier characters are far less predictable for obvious reasons which could have them placing higher here
To americans, stop making excuses when you lose and bragging nonstop when you win, 3 SF characters are american stereotypes so please get the message.

You people bashing the Americans need to get a clue. The Japanese have geography on their side. They always play each other constantly to get better. If we took all the best American sfiv players and put them all in the same location and they wasted their lives playing day in and day out, they'd be just as good or better.
So stop being so ignorant. I'm getting sick of it.

Stop talking about american players in an SBO article, they are s h i t and thats all, talk about the winners thats how should be.
Posted by @ getaclue on August 15, 2009 at 2:06 p.m. #83
If American players aren't willing to do what Japanese players do day in, day out, to win (which they clearly don't, even half admitted by yourself) then they have no business arrogantly entering these tournaments expecting to win and running their mouth to no end during the build up. Good players, don't get me wrong, but evidently not good enough to compete with the top Japanese players. Until they're willing to drop the arrogance, the ego's, learn some humility and concentration, and put more dedication and time into getting better, they'll never win major tournaments.
Arrogance, and ego is ultimately the American SF players biggest downfall.

Western society is based on thinking that you are better than everyone else even though you suck at something. A scrubby culture.
The Japanese culture is very modest and based on what you really achieve. Not on how hard you can run your mouth before you've proven anything.
Hence, the difference between all those idiots at EVO who were jumping up and down like apes while Daigo was sitting and concentrating on the match, figuring out strategies.

A nice result for someone that went there to improve himself, and that´s the way they should have faced it.
A shame for someone that had thought that could win this tournament... Which is not the best way to face a tournament of this level.

The future of mankind looks very bleak. Video game tournaments will supplant every actual sport on our planet, and humanity will become fat, lazy, and stupid because of video games. The rejects in high school will suddenly become the dominant driving force of our Earth, as people will be in awe with their precision gaming skills. Yes, the lifeless nerds may just experience their own depraved cultural renaissance.

Regarding all hate messages toward Team USA
To the Japanese posters: no complaint, you guys are the champ, you can brag and sh!tting on us to your heart's content, cuz you beat us fair and square. When you are finished, we’ll shake your hands, congratulate you and say “see you next time!”
To the home grown: grow some freaking balls. Instead of sitting around and b!tching about home team, how about put your money where your mouth is. Our teams did the best they can, show some love. You do know most of our players have a job and a life outside of SF4 too. None of them can just play games all day. There is a long way to go before we can beat the Japanese in their tournament, playing the games they made, following their rules, in their home turf. Being a sourpuss is not going to get us there. Criticism is helpful only if you are being constructive. If you don’t have anything useful to say, don’t say thing.
To the Euros or other places that doesn’t matter at all at anything: I don’t see any of your teams even qualify for SBO SF4, We owed your sorry a$$ in all the foreign qualifying matches. The funny thing is y’all telling the US team about humility while you losers bashing on America, like you have the rights. Hey, fools: how about practice what you preach. Get better first, then maybe, maybe we can converse in equal footing.
In any competition, it doesn’t matter how you behave after you win, you can be modest and cool, or show off your swagger like a champ, as long as you keep winning. In America, there is only one thing we recognize, that is winning. Yeah, we lost, we’ll take all the sh!t dished out by the winners like a good sport. However, you bottom dwellers want some of that action, then come and try to take us out first before running your foul mouths off.
Don’t like being called out? Well, as the name say: PUT UP or SHUT UP!

You people bashing the Americans need to get a clue. The Japanese have geography on their side. They always play each other constantly to get better. If we took all the best American sfiv players and put them all in the same location and they wasted their lives playing day in and day out, they'd be just as good or better.
So stop being so ignorant. I'm getting sick of it.
not only in game but in working also. IF half of Americans start actually working instead of living out of welfare then we wont be in this crisis.

Maybe you Americans need to realize that the Japanese are just better at you at Street Fighter period, and always will be.
I can't see no top American player to ever win SBO, but any top Japanese player can win EVO for jokes
Go on ArcadeHustla the youtube channel, your own top American players call Japan the hyperbolic time chamber: playing in Japan will increase your skill tenfold in just 6 months then if you were to play in America for a year - so just playing street fighter all day every day wont get you skilled, but its who you play, the best of the best, and they themselves see that as Japan

@109 Check the full message, Akita. I give mad props to the Japanese for beating the US. I ain't gonna make any excuses for losing, they are just better.
I'll set the record straight. Korea and Taiwan did qualify for SBO SF4 too. They at least have some credibility to talk smack. However, they lost in the first round as well. It seems higher national IQ didn't really factor into this, and you know what: if they had open qualification matches, the US team would took their qualifications too.
@ White=Stupid. I'm not white, and I don't promote white supremacy, I promote winner supremacy. That means only if you totally owed somebody, you get to talk trash about them. Like the Japanese can p!ss on the US team right now, cuz they earned it. What I don't understand is how come the countries that got totally floored by the US in SF4, start to mouth off about the US losing to Japan. I don't care what part of the world you are in, this is called sour grapes in any sort of competition, in any language. It's like the Cavaliers saying the Magic sucks for losing to the Lakers. Even if you are the one of the best like LeBron, you don't get to say that because Magic whopped your @$$. (I hope he won't be saying that, cuz he is in enough hot water already).
Whether you like it or not, there is a hierarchy in any legit competition. They all follow the same principle: you don't get to b!tch about the team that is better than you unless you beat them, whether you like them or not. You are calling me arrogant for stating that? Wow, it really shows how much more class you have.

Who goes to a foreign country, not bother to learn the language, and not bother to have a translator? You can't complain if you can't understand why people are having trouble with what you're doing. It's like a Mexican going into a bank trying to get a home loan and not having anyone who can translate a lot of very specific terms so they can understand. It's full of fail and shows poorly on them worse than their embarrassing loss.

Many people seem to be distressed that American SFIV gamers are not on the same plateau as Japanese gamers. So what? If everyone approaches this topic from a different perspective, the situation is not as bad as popular belief may dictate.
That just means that Japanese gamers are even bigger losers than American gamers. Take a breath of fresh air and come to the realization that life is more than winning insignificant video game tournaments. Most of the top Japanese professional games are social defects who never got laid and will probably nut themselves the instant they catch a glimpse of a partially exposed female breast; to aspire to be these hopeless dorks is daft.
SFIV will continue to be fun and all, but for the game (and other video games in general) to completely occupy one's life is an undercurrent problem amongst socially defunct gamers.

If people wanna spend time playing (and winning) SF tourneys, let them. They arent losers, they're better than you. If you can get payed to do what you love to do, thats hustlin'. They get payed to put in so much time/dedication into games and for winning tourneys. All we amateurs get is higher CP online.

Totally agree with #136. It shouldn't be about nations. So many idiotic comments about Japan>US and US>Europe and why US is allowed to talk sh*t about the level of play in Europe. I think you some of you guys can learn something about humility even in victory. You didn't see Daigo bragging about how easy EVO was.
Would actually have liked to have seen J Wong get further personally. However can you imagine the amount of bs comments that would have been said if this kind of crap is already said when he and the rest of the US team get beat in the 1st round?
Posted by Put up or shut up on August 16, 2009 at 6:29 p.m. #139
To Akita: I'll retract that statement regarding Europe and other places, because it was very unethical on my part. I'll apologize to anyone that was offended by that statement.
I totally agree with #136, this should never been about nations. Then, how come #137 start to trash US again? The goal of my post is not to offend other people, but to defend the America Team, from home and abroad. Check out this post, check out any other post, tell me it's not filled with smacks about Team USA. Yes, they lost, they were beaten fair and square. (like I said again and again in #95 and #119) So that gives everyone the rights to sh!t on them? I think it's basic human decency to respect the people who sacrificed so much to represent your country, in win or in loss. (yes, they've sacrificed, unless you think air travel and hotels and entrance fees are free in Japan, and weeks of preparation are nothing worth mentioning.)
To Reality Check & Falcon Dive:
I really don't think you guys are in the right board. Don't take it wrong. You are entitled in your opinion. You can be casual player and not take this seriously. You might look down on all professional players as social outcasts. Then, why stay, better not waste your precious time here then.
We are passionate about this because we treat all professional gamers not only as professionals, but athletes as well. Their love for the game, and their sacrifice for the game earn them the title. If you disagree, think about this: why do we hold chess players, go players, pool players in such high esteem? In reality, aren't the venues they excel in simply games as well? Why do F-1 racers, Nascar racers receive so much fame? In really, don't they simply playing on a different arcade machine?
If you say, "oh, they are just doing something they love, it doesn't count as hard work." I'll dare you to spend a week putting up like the professional gamers. After that, then you can talk smack about them.

i think its safe to say that sbo and its single elimination format is a joke... even scrubs get lucky and win two rounds...sometimes... thats why evo will always be the better tourney

There's nothing wrong with representing your country but I don't want Justin Wong the Whiner, to do so.
Yeah, he may be somewhat good, but if he's supposed to represent America like you say he is, then his team name should have spoken for itself. And it DOES. He's still a selfish, self-centered, whiny, lacks manners, and disrespectful individual. I'm sure there are alot of folks that agree with me.
This is why the rest of the world will continue to hate America. It's because lots of us portray ourselves as cocky, overconfident, disrespectful, and loud.
I would rather have someone who may not be as good, but much more humble represent America.
