Making SF4's Survival and Time Attack modes a lot easier
If you want to unlock all 10 colors and personal actions in Street Fighter 4 you have to beat the Survival and Time Attack modes all the way up until round 17.
This is a long, tedious and sometimes difficult process, but there's a way to make it much easier.
Street Fighter 4's computer AI has a really hard time with Zangief's Lariat (3x Punch) move. Even during the tougher challenges, it will only block the first hit, but subsequent attacks will usually get through.
In some rounds all you'll have to do is this move, while in others you may have throw in a little blocking and timing.
So while spamming Gief's Lariat over and over may not win you style points, it will make getting through these challenges MUCH easier, and then you can have full access to the taunts and colors for each character.

I got 100 wins with him...than i got tired and just loss, probably could have kept going. And I was able to get AI Akuma in the hardest difficult with him....

The time trials and survival modes are pretty tedious. I wouldn't have even bothered unlocking the colours if it weren't for this trick. Even doing it this way it's a PITA and takes way too long.
Posted by Ray on April 6, 2009 at 2:29 a.m. #5
I did Survival 1-10 by putting turbo on PPP Lariat and setting the stick down. 'Gief won by just standing there spamming Lariat until he eventually lost on Survival 11.
If you have problems with AI Cammy, which I've seen some people say, just crouch and spam jab. It'll knock her out of most moves.
Posted by VALEJ on April 6, 2009 at 3:46 a.m. #6
Aside from some character’s AI that require you to readjust the standalone PPP approach (Ray’s tip works quit nicely), the “Zangief Method” will get you through most of the challenges.
IMHO, this technique only works because of the “generally excessive aggressive behaviour” of the AI, making it charge in to battle incessantly, with outcomes that tend to favour it against all odds (cheating).
John Lyly once said: "All is fair in love and war". So I guess that resorting to “Zangief Method” is just a way to even the score.
By the way, does anyone else beside me, suspects that the “Evil Cell Processor” is responsible for the character’s nasty behaviour, or do my friends that favour other machines, find themselves in the same predicament as I do? :)

There's 10 personal actions, you get the last one by completing Time Attack 10
Posted by Romzen on April 6, 2009 at 8:28 a.m. #8
I did it this way and it was a pain the ass anyway.
Posted by Tanooki on April 6, 2009 at 8:49 a.m. #9
I actually found using E. Honda easier. He's quicker and can move around the screen faster, which is important for Time Trial. The CPU suffers from the Ochio Throw. You can literally spam the move as the enemy gets up and get perfects.

lmao i did this with a friend when we got the game
sure it takes a long time, but its shorter then trying to do it over and over with your favorites

Thanks, I'm sure this will help. I've beaten the arcade mode without losing a round on the hardest difficulty, but I cannot seem to beat frigging time trial 11 (Blanka is a jerkwad). Here's hoping this works.

Posted by yflow on April 6, 2009 at 1:40 p.m. #19
I did that a while back. It's not because they're too hard, just that they're annoying and I don't want to do them. I'll never visit those challenges again.
Posted by Levaranoia on April 6, 2009 at 3:41 p.m. #20
Yeah I did this a while ago and forgot to post it, I found they would always counter the first hit by goin into their focus attack but then the lariat would hit them and eat up their life. I dont know how many perfects I got against the cpu with just doin that stunning them, focus attack and then doin his super. I find it pretty easy to do zangief's super if u start spinning the controller when zangief is performing his FA and then when they fall to their knees he will usually grab them and finish them with the super.
Posted by shuriken on April 6, 2009 at 3:44 p.m. #21
If you got problems with blanka, use focus attack alot. And do not jump on him. If you are stuck in the corner, use a armor breaking move. He usually does alot of focus attackes.

i thought i was the only person who knew this o.O. Well, this guide nails it right down as cammy was the only person who could throw in a good challenge. Watch out for jimmy too, he can be a handful if you aren't careful

HR, thanks for the heads up. I've updated this post and also the unlocking guide to note the 10th taunt.

Yeah cammy is pretty good against the zangief technique so can crimson viper sometimes if she comes at you hard.
Posted by K-man on April 6, 2009 at 5:54 p.m. #25
Haha, this is exactly what I did when unlocking colors and taunts, during my second week with the game. Some of the settings in some levels make it incredibly difficult to do it with anyone else.
Time Attack is really annoying though, some of it forces you to go through like 75 rounds to get a gold medal. Which just isn't worth, mostly because it's boring as hell once you're already faced all 25 characters in the roster once, so I usually just went the minimum wins to pass the level and then let the AI KO me the next round.
Posted by balla05 on April 6, 2009 at 7:11 p.m. #26
i think akuma is better because his moves are easy and his ultra takes alot damage. yall should try him cause i did it with him and im not that good
Posted by andrew on April 6, 2009 at 7:19 p.m. #27
yeah tanooki's right...the cpu never tries to dodge oicho as they're getting up, easy win

I used his lariat(as mentioned already) but also balrogs headbutt. its also pretty funny as he laughs when he headbutts. LOL. i spammed the crap out of his headbutt and giefs lariat. RED CYCLONE FOREVER!!! AND GET PAID!!!

Personal action?? Is this the gesture the character performs when he wins?
I've unlocked a about half the colours but am desperate to do more, so thanks for the tips, I'll be trying the big Z and the big E.

Posted by matt on April 10, 2009 at 9:03 a.m. #35
to get the final taunt i forget if its time or survival but you have to beat round 20 to get it.
Posted by good_advice on April 14, 2009 at 9:20 a.m. #36
It's a good technique, still some of the characters can give Zangief a hard time. You would usually watch out for Cammy's Spiral Arrow - block it low first, then counter it. Also, in the fights where the CPU have unlimited/refilling Super/Ultra gauges they have a tendency to using these attacks while standing up, so be careful. And stunned opponents are begging for Zangief's ultra >:]. It's much easier to execute from jump. In battles, where special moves are turned off, I'd recommend using powerful chars (like Akuma or Balrog), and going all out with cheap sweeps and combos. Hope it helps someone.

Another technique is just using the double suplex, and time it so when they about to get up you jump in and do it again. they never retaliate and its a much faster way of killing.

Does this work on Hard?
I want all the cool Icons. I personally had no problem doing the reg survival/time attack but these hard versions take some extra effort, something I don't feel like doing during finals week in college
=o
Posted by Mike on April 20, 2009 at 11:59 a.m. #41
@JDragonX
Yeah, it does.
Just lariat spam against the whole cast, but when theyre getting up just stay .5-1 char length away I've found; stuffs any kind of wakeup and the CPU tends to FA more from that distance.
Against Cammy (who I was getting destroyed by for a long time) Ray is absolutely right. Just hold down/back and spam the living hell out of your light punch. You'll knock her out of everything and eventually kill her without hardly getting hit. When she supers/ultras just keep holding down/back and block it. After you're done blocking go back to spam. :)
Enjoy the PA/Colors/Titles/Icons everyone!

How should I do time trial 14 or whatever the one is where special moves aren't allowed?
Posted by champ on April 26, 2009 at 11:34 p.m. #44
IN order to beat time trial 14 u have to get a character that has an easy super and constantly perform your super as the opponent is getting up...preferably while the opp. is in the corner... works 4 sure.......

i also found out that with blanka its pretty ez as well using his rolling attacks except the challenges were u cant use special moves then its a pain in the butt

I find just playing super-aggresive with whatever character (I use ken) tends to work pretty well in these, with the odd bit of holding back, block, counter against a few of the 'tougher'-though-still-stupid ai.
Zangief clothesline spam works online against newer players also, I tried it before, took 3 matches before I managed to beat someone just spamming that one move, found it pretty funny =).

how do you beat blanka with zangief?
Posted by Boogie on May 15, 2009 at 11:59 a.m. #52
A very solid trick. However, you have to be careful with characters like Sakura who can attack without getting struck, and E. Honda can be a pain. The one time this won't help is in Normal Survival Challenge 19, which doesn't let the player use any special moves at all. Afterwards, it's not that bad.
Posted by N-TWO-O on May 16, 2009 at 11:31 a.m. #53
I managed to do all Normal Time Attack and Survival modes, and Hard Time Attack upto 3 and Hard Survival upto 2 solely with Chun-Li, but I'm having a stupidly hard time getting any further. I really don't want to resort to the "Zangief Method", but for getting those Japanese symbol Icons, it seems very tempting.
Posted by zangief on May 22, 2009 at 2:38 p.m. #54
another zangief trick is to do one spd. The instant you're able to move again, do a lp greenhand. Buffer in a 360 and hit punch the minute ai wakes up and you'll spd again. Rinse and repeat. Works against any AI, any difficulty, including cammy/blanka. May be a little tricky at first but I main Zangief so this is pretty easy for me.
Posted by Another hint on May 23, 2009 at 7:20 a.m. #55
If you play as Dhalsim, the AI seems to rarely block his hard punch, and since it has such an extremely long range you can perfect MANY of your enemies without them even getting close!
Posted by Boogie on May 25, 2009 at 5:35 p.m. #56
That's a good point. I recall when fighting Seth, I would maintain about medium range, block his hard punch and counter with the hard punch in return. The only thing that worries me is that Dhalsim is slow as molasses.

@Tito : vs Bison you spam LariatPPP ONLY when Bison's Ultra is NOT enabled ! When it's enabled, crouch protect because he will use his Ultra as a wakeup move (on harder difficulties). Then go on spamming Lariat as usual.

Hey guys, I'm a little bit stuck... I'm trying to gold every challenge, and have managed up untill time attack level 14 (the no special moves 1.... I mean as if... when are you ever not gunna use specials for 12 rounds.... total joke). I can get perfects and all sorts with vega but his blasted unreliable ultra is making it so that even with 2 perfects i ended up with like... 17 seconds on the clock at the end of 12 rounds... Does any1 know the gold time requirement for this challenge? Also survival round 15, how many rounds are there? I died on 20 and was obviously most disconcerted... I will be even more so if it was 20 for gold...
Any help would be awsome. Cheers!!!

Got it! Level 14, time attack: Ok, so I used akuma and basically used jumping high kick linked to a low punch or kick and a low hard kick, which may not combo, I didnt notice, but CPU doesnt seem to block effectively. Also the standing kicks while holding back can often hit several times in a row before CPU starts to block. Use super and ultra as they r landing infront of u. Gold crown requires 100 seconds on the clock, I got 107 first try. Give it a go if you're having problems on that part!
Also, this guide was massively helpful:
http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/str...
It gives quite detailed tricks to try and beat the various stages of normal and hard time attack and survival (Predominantly with Zangief, though the no special ones give details for akuma as above), aswell as gold crown requirements.
#w61 swwr I recommend maybe checking this link out, as it gives details of each character that will be faced in hard mode and extra tips for successfully defeating cammy and seth with zangief!!! (Seems they r the "lariat technique" problem characters)
Hope this stuff is all usefull. Sorry for the essay!

I've done most of the Survival and Time Attacks with Ryu and Gouki. But I've been stuck on the last survival and Cammy keeps destroying me. :p
But I even tried the 'Zangief Lariat Spam' but its boring for me. I'll probably use it as a last resort...if Gouki fails one me. :D

These trials are so boring, why does capcom want us to prove that we can beat a CP with redicoulous handicaps like Time Trial 5. Beat all normal ones with Sagat but the hard ones call for Giefs Lat Spamming, which requires patience and timming against Cammy because she can get reall c*ntlike with those spiral arrow combinations.

If your doing it with zangief i recommend when you knock them to the floor with the X3 punch stand a little further back then wait a second to do it again as they get up
if you do it right they'll try and counter you with an ex-focus which will fail and you will hit them for more damage, a bigger help in the time trial i found for taking down your enemies that much faster
Posted by Hara_Kiri on July 22, 2009 at 10:07 a.m. #77
Seth is still a pain in the ***.
Don't start your Laria too close to him, because he can easily disrupt it. But don't start too far either because he can suck you in then disrupt any attacks.
find the good distance and the good timing.
good luck.

For those who have problems on the levels that u cant use special moves, choose Chun Li and hold foward down and hard kick on your opponent cause she just keep jumping over them why hiting them. Also u could also do her crouching hard punch, effective. Time Attack level 11 i used El Fuerte and kept on body slamming and and grabbing with that dash move.

The AI in Sf4 = Just VERY cheap .. It's going to Focus every attack .. For instance.Just spamming Jab vs Cammy's going to work but jumping on her or trying to do long range attack that can be focused won't work and you will get owned.Just like trying to jump on ryu he will simply spam SRK .. For instance .. Doing long frame Poke with any charatcer while the Ai got their ultra ready you're going to eat it.
The AI basicly read every input you do and try to counter it perfectly. But the AI can't beat LP (or poke with little frame) or Lariat Zangief.Seriously vs the ai just spam any long armor breaker move(that hit 2-3 time) and you're going to win.
That why the aie can't beat Lariat lol. The ai in sf4 = Just cheap.. Kinda like Seth .. For instance vs set just counter every move with dash punch(boxer) and you're going to get easy win,

Why doesn´t anyone talk about EDDY HONDA? I have never played the online game, so I don´t know if he´s really good against real people, but he is fantastic when fighting the CPU. I almost always win Sakura, M. Bison, Balrog and other characters without losing any hit points, and all I have to do is to use sumo headbutt. And if you can master the combinaton of this attack with his super, it will be very useful. You will also win the other characters easily, as he is so easy to play with. I managed to finish all time attacks and survivals with him. And you will be able to win and have fun at the same time. The only hard character is Cammy.
A good tip in time attack is to let the easier characters hit you, in order to keep your Ultra high against really hard characters, such as Ken, Cammy, Seth and Gouki.
Still, I have noticed that, if you can use Blanka´s ex shock till the end of the battle, some enemies will perish easily.
I also have a question: is it possible to complete all trials using the keyboards? I have done almost all of them, but I can´t make Dhalsim´s first level 3 trial (medium kick [short]+ yoga flame). I know it´s not hard, and maybe it´s because I have no joystick. But I´m not sure.

Regarding the gief stuff, Cammy can be a pain. A way I've found is by walking back you'll trigger the AI to do her spin punch. You can then easily double lariat her. If she gets too close, you'll take some hits getting away, but triggering her spin punch will allow you to double lariat easily.
