Seth Killian and Chris Svensson made a number of new posts on the Capcom Unity forums to update readers on some of the gameplay options in Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, and a few other topics. Is there something holding up SSF2T HD Remix?
Chris: We're nearing the end of development... Age of Booty is out before HD Remix so that's a priority right now. There will be lots more HD Remix coverage in the coming weeks leading up to release.
Frankly, we're hitting a very busy window for the industry right now (up through Thanksgiving) so competing against the noise of retail releases for the next several weeks isn't so easy for digital titles.
If you select the old ruleset in HD Remix, will it still keep the HD look?
Chris: You can have the old gameplay with the new characters/backgrounds/music, the old gameplay with the new backgrounds and music but the old sprites. I forget but we might have gotten in the option to use the original music too (I'll have to check if that made it in, I've never seen anyone actually using the old music since the new stuff is so good).
So to answer the original question, yes. You decide how you want to play. The only thing that's "fixed" are the new HD backgrounds. Similarly, you can choose to play widescreen or 4:3, independently of someone else online (they can have the other setting if they so desire).
With the purchasers of HD Remix split into XBox and PS3, is it possible to have players from either system compete with one another online?
Chris: Unfortunately, first parties won't let cross play happen, so they'll be restricted to play with their own platforms.
Could you please tell us whether Street Fighter 4 is coming to Steam?
Chris: I'm evaluating multiple digital distribution options but I've got no announcements to make at this time.
Is Yoshinori Ono is afraid to try anything new again, character wise in Street Fighter 4?
Seth: Just getting back to the initial question, saying *anything* about SFIV = "afraid to take chances" is frankly ridiculous. Going back and creating an all-new Street Fighter after so many years and so little action in the fighting genre took a lot of guts, vision, and leadership. The game also took some chances both by using the 3D models, which had an unpopular history, and by sticking to a very traditional mechanic--2D gameplay. This is a big investment for Capcom, and a bold one.
The new characters were among the first characters revealed, and what was the reaction from (the Shoryuken forums)? "She looks like an SNK clone!" "That fat guy is stupid," etc. After they started to play those characters, of course they could believe me that they were all worthy additions to the Street Fighter universe, and are fun characters with distinct styles.
Anyway this is just to say 1) Everything about SFIV is ballsy. 2) Even the hardcore complain about new characters when they are brand new, and more casual players are even less likely to be excited. "Too many new characters" was a clear factor in the SFIII troubles.
Also, I count 6 new characters: Abel, Viper, Rufus, Fuerte, Gouken, and my main man Seth (Smile)
Finally, did we already officially announce that the entire SFIV cast has been revealed? I don't remember saying that...
I've seen that a lot of people want to play SF3 Third Strike on their PSP. Is it so hard to port this game to PSP?
Chris: I don't think it's a challenge exactly, but it's not trivial.
Could it happen? I suppose. I think there have just been higher priorities than porting another SF to PSP. We're watching a few things carefully in the PSP market though and we've got some "ideas". :P
Also, on a final note about HD Remix, Seth Killian confirmed that E. Honda's Super can no longer be "stored," so you can't do the motion and hold forward and have it done at the press of a button — but his Super did get better in many other ways.
