Sagat Strategy Guide and Moves: Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix
Last updated on Jan. 4, 2009
Character Overview
HD Remix Sagat is a mix between his "Old" Super Street Fighter 2 counterpart and his Super Turbo version. Compared to "Old" Sagat, his Tiger Shots have had more recovery time added to make them less abusable.
This was a good balance adjustment because "Old" Sagat could be too dominate in some cases, and this change helps bring him back in line with the rest of the characters.
Still, you're going to spend a lot of the match chipping away your opponent's life with a mixture of High and Low Tiger shots. Timing is crucial when you're playing Sagat, and you'll want to develop your game so that you can recover from your projectiles right before the moment your opponent is about to hit — so you can go into a Tiger Uppercut.
If you Uppercut too early, you won't receive maximum damage from your attack, and if its too late you'll be eating a combo.
You develop something of a sixth-sense when playing Sagat for long enough. You'll know when to bait your opponent into jumping at you, or to push them away with repeated Tiger Shots. And when the action gets too tight, you can jump backwards with Hard Kick to buy some time.
HD Remix Sagat is a defensive powerhouse who got another offensive option now that his Tiger Knee juggles. He can still keep you out consistently with his Tiger Shots and his Tiger Uppercut is devastating.
He remains one of the best characters in the game.
• Strengths •
+ His attacks take off a lot of power.
+ Defensive powerhouse, it's difficult to get in on a great Sagat player.
+ He has some the best fireball traps in the game.
+ His Hard Kick jump in attack isn't easy to anti air.
+ Tiger Uppercut still does a ton of damage when timed correctly.
+ Juggling with the Tiger Knee gives him a solid offensive tool.
+ Still one of the best overall characters in the game.
• Weaknesses •
- His foot speed is slow.
- You need excellent timing to play him well.
- His limbs can be hit after throwing a Tiger Shot.
- Can be knocked out of Tiger Uppercut if you don't execute it at the right moment.
Special Moves
![]()
• High Tiger Shot •
You need to watch your spacing with Sagat's high projectiles. His arm stays way the heck out there and he's fully upright after throwing this fireball, making it easy for your opponent to hit you if you're not careful.
But this move comes out very quickly and the height of his High Tiger Shots can be used to blast back jumping opponents.
Most players use the Low Tiger Shots more frequently because they're a bit more safe in some situations, but the High versions are great when thrown out with proper timing an accuracy.
They also serve as an excellent bait tactic. You can throw one out there to make your opponent jump in towards you thinking they're about to land a big combo, but if you time it correctly you'll recover a split second before they're able to attack you letting you nail them with a Tiger Uppercut for big damage.
Learning the proper spacing and timing for this tactic takes a lot of practice, but it's one the keys to playing a dominate Sagat.

• Low Tiger Shot •
This version of Sagat's Tiger Shot is a bit more safe from counter attacks and it's the one you'll likely be throwing out there the most often.
It must be blocked low, and you can use them to constantly push your opponent backwards away from you.
They come out so quickly and do really good damage, so unless the other fighter has really good projectile counters they have to constantly be aware of how to deal with your fireballs.
![]()
• Tiger Uppercut •
Sagat's Hard Punch Uppercut is one of the most damaging moves in the game. You'll need to look for ways during the match to land this attack, and that's made all the more easy because of Sagat's fireball game.
The Tiger Uppercut is invulnerable for just a few frames after you execute this move, before Sagat raises his hand above his head. It's also during these invincible frames that it does the most damage.
Because you can be knocked out of this attack at all other stages, it makes your timing an execution absolutely critical.
And while the pay off for landing this attack is good, it's very rare when you won't take damage for missing it; so you need to be careful about when and where you throw it out.
![]()
• Tiger Knee •
It's now possible to juggle with Sagat's Tiger Knee for up to three hits.
Super Move
![]()
• Tiger Genocide (Super) •
Combos
• Jumping Hard Kick, Crouching Medium Kick, Cancel into Hard Kick Tiger Knee •
Depending on your spacing you can sometimes juggle your opponent with another Tiger Knee to finish off this combo.
• Cross up with Jumping Medium Kick, Crouching Medium Punch, Link into Crouching Medium Kick, Cancel into Hard Kick Tiger Knee, juggle with Hard Kick Tiger Knee •
This does massive damage, and it's possible to do this against some of the big characters without crossing up. As far as I know, it can't be landed against Chun Li because her hit box is too small.
• Jumping Hard Kick, Standing Medium Kick, Cancel into Low Tiger Shot •
You have to Cancel the first hit of your Standing Medium Kick, or the Tiger Shot will not come out. If you're close enough and positive you're going to hit — you can do a Tiger Uppercut instead of the Tiger Shot.
Normal Moves
Note, this is not a complete list of Sagat's normal moves, just the ones we think are noteworthy.
(In the air)
• Jumping Hard Kick •
This attack is high priority and damaging and it's difficult to anti air, making it one of Sagat's best normal moves. This should be the main attack you jump in with.
You can also use it while jumping away to escape some rough situations, and while it's difficult to counter it's not impossible so don't get too predictable with it.
• Hard Punch Bitch Slap •
High damage, comes out quickly and has a long reach, but it's very susceptible to low attacks. You're going to use this move most often to trade hits because you'll win out on damage most of the time.
If your timing and prediction skills are good you can use this to hit characters like Ryu and Ken out of their Fireballs as they're starting their animation.
A very good poke.
Changes from Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
* Super has more range, and always knocks down if it hits.
* Tiger Shot recovery is better than New Sagat but worse than (Super Street Fighter 2) Old Sagat.
* Tiger Knee changed to Dragon Punch motion with Kick.
* Some normal moves are from Old Sagat.
* Standing Medium Punch can be canceled into special moves, second hit of standing Light and Medium Kick cannot.
* Tiger Knee always knocks down and juggles (but NOT into Super).
* Tiger Knee damage reduced because of new juggle property.

The Tiger Knee motion has been changed (DP+K). Nice compendium; can't wait for the game to finally hit!

Sagat is a beast now.

I think FREEMAN said it best; the word beast is what comes to mind when i'm using Sagat. Juggle tiger knee is too fun, and way addicting.

Great guide and it's neatly arranged but as a sagat player some of your info is incorrect.
Why do you say his attacks are slow? which attacks specifically and where's the frame data proving it?
Why do you say he doesn't have options for playing offensively? He's good at playing turtle yes but he's equally able to play aggressively and even more so in remix due to tk's juggling and super.
You should note his crmk as one of his best normals since double tk's can be comboed off it making it the ideal normal to use in footsies.

I think the best combo is jump HK standing HK then do two Tiger Knees for a relatively easy 5 hit combo. If you can get a jump HK in you're set. Dizzy chance is pretty high too.

Thanks for the notes Zoolander.
When I revisit the Sagat guide I'll make sure I note the Crouching Medium Kick into Tiger Knee and I'll try to better explain myself on the other areas.

How do you do three tiger knees?? I have tried for almost an hour in training mode to do it and the most i can get is two. I've only seen three TK online and that made me practice. After the hour i just decided it was lag. Guess i'm wrong.
Posted by curtiscflush on January 23, 2009 at 11:14 a.m. #12
@supersize56: that would be three hits, from two tiger knees, not three tiger knees.
thanks for the guide. very helpful.

yes sagat is a beast, the juggle tiger knee is very useful, and the fierce tiger uppercut is very damaging
Posted by supersize56 on January 30, 2009 at 6:57 p.m. #14
@curtiscflush. No i mean three tiger knees. I've had it done to me about three times now. no bs. I'm not sure if it's three weak tk to make the three hits or one strong tk for two hits and one more tk for the third hit. gotta try it.

@supersize56 You can use Tiger Knee to juggle up to Three hits. So If Your first two TKs only hit once you can land a third one. This is a great way to corner some1 quickly. If you use the Tk in anticipation of a jump in and quikly do the second TK you will only get two hits in most of the time allowing the third TK to hit and hopefully corner your opponent.

Also You CAN land his super after a TK IF they "bounce" off of the corner, but only with the second half of the super (Tiger upper part) But the timing is tough and usually ends with you wasting your super and knock down advantages.

@Blaze1 Yeah definitely possible, but timing and spacing is difficult especially in a real match >_<. I think this combo was in the "capcombos" combo video.

ok so SF4 sagat boards are flushed with stupid trials questions, an actual fight question
what's your strategy against a good guile? I always trade with him and i can't consistently beat them. I pummel with low tigers and bait them in but i can never get the timing right to avoid a flash kick, something about his standing HK that baits me to attack. and good guiles are the masters of blocking.
any advice?
oh and (SF4 term here) fadc-->tiger uppercut or ultra is good, but timing is reallllllyyyyy tough

Gah, I hate Sagat. Not because he is tough or anything, but just the fact that he is basically a Ryu clone. He HAS great easily spammable projectiles (With the most annoying voice in game: TIGAH TIGAH TIGAH TIGAH TIGAH) has a better version of the shoryuken (TIGAH TIGAH TIGAH UPPAHCUT TIGAH TIGAH) and his TIGAH KNEE is at least original, but annoying since he can do 3 hits with 2 of them (TIGAH UPPAHCUT TIGAH TIGAH KNEEEEE TIGAH KNEEEEE TIGAH TIGAH UPPAHCUT)
Add to this the fact he has the most annoying voice in any game ever and the fact he is utterly lifeless and looks utterly stupid the way he walks and taunts after victory and...
So, yeah, Sagat FTL.
