Basic gameplay details: Street Fighter 4

Focus Attacks

Joystick Joystick Joystick
A Focus Attack (sometimes known as a Saving Attack) is done by pressing the Medium Punch and Kick buttons at the same time. This combines both defense and offense in one powerful package.

Your character will enter a special preparation pose, which will absorb one attack — which is usually referred to as having Super Armor — and then they'll unleash a move in retaliation.

Your character can only absorb one attack, and only then if it's not a throw or armor breaking move. Two or more attacks will knock your character out of their Focus Attack.

There are three levels of Focus Attacks depending on how long you hold down the buttons.

Level 1: Simply tap the buttons or release after a split second. Your character will launch a weak attack.

Level 2: Hold the buttons for about a second and you'll see your character flash. then release. This causes you to do a medium powered attack which will open up the other fighter for a combo if it lands.

Level 3: Hold the buttons for about 2 ½ seconds. This causes you to flash yellow and the resulting attack is unblockable, you can also combo after this move if it lands.

Absorbing a hit with a Focus Attack also builds Revenge Meter, used for executing an Ultra move.

Throwing and Counter Throwing

Joystick Joystick Joystick
Throwing is done by pressing the Light Punch and Kick buttons at the same time when you're close to your opponent and holding back or towards. You can break your opponent's throw attempt by pressing the Light Punch and Kick buttons at the moment they try to throw you.

Ultra Moves

Street Fighter 4 Ultra Meter

This is basically an enhanced super move, which you can execute by doing the same motion as your character's super move, but pressing all three punch or kick buttons instead of just one.

You can only perform an Ultra move by building up your Revenge Meter so its over half-full, then the word "Ultra" will light up meaning you can execute one. You build up Revenge Meter by taking damage.

Your Revenge Meter does not transfer over to the next round.

Super Moves

Street Fighter 4 Super Bar

These are usually an enhanced special move. Most times they are executed by doing a double motion and pressing a punch or kick button.

Your Super Bar is the Blue meter at the bottom of the screen. The word, "Super!" appears when you've fully charged it, and then you can perform your character's applicable Super move.

EX Moves

EX moves are executed by pressing two punch or two kick buttons after doing the respective motion for a move. For example to execute Ryu's EX Hadoken (Fireball) you would do the down, down-forward, forward motion and press the Light and Medium punch buttons. Some players find it easier to press all three buttons at one time to help ensure their EX moves come out.

Doing an EX move takes away some of your Super meter.

Dashing

Joystick Joystick      or      Joystick Joystick
You can dash forwards or backwards by double tapping the joystick towards or away.

Focus Attack Dash Canceling

Joystick Joystick Joystick (hold)    Joystick Joystick    (Release) Joystick Joystick Joystick
Sometimes referred to as a 'FADC' or a 'SADC'. After executing some special moves, you can Dash Cancel by pressing and holding the buttons for your Focus Attack and hitting forward twice and then releasing the Medium Punch and Kick buttons to cancel the animation to set up more hits in a combo.

This also takes part of your Super meter to do.

Getting up quickly after a knock down

Joystick
When you're being knocked down, you can get up quickly by tapping down on the joystick when you're just about to hit the ground. Your character will rise up faster than they normally would, but this doesn't work with throws and some other attacks.

Super Armor and Armor Breaking

Some EX-Moves and all Focus Attacks allow you to absorb one attack, this is often referred to as having Super Armor.

But all of the characters have some moves that will negate this effect, and these are called Armor Breaking attacks.

Also remember that while Super Armor allows you to absorb one attack, you can still be thrown.

Taunting (Personal Action)

Joystick Joystick Joystick
You can taunt your opponent by pressing both Hard Punch and Kick buttons at the same time.

General notes

Street Fighter 4 uses the traditional 6 button layout in most Capcom fighting games. The gameplay is 2-D, even though the graphics are 3-D. Characters move along a 2-D plane, and the camera will make 3-D flourishes based on what's currently happening.

So...is the revenge meter just for ultra supers or can revenge be used for anything else?

Posted by peter on November 11, 2008 at 5:07 a.m. #4

thx for all this but i'm a bit confused by the focus attacks, after you held down the appropriate buttons and blocked(saved)...just release both buttons to retaliate or...?
hope to hear,thank you

Posted by Catalyst on November 12, 2008 at 6:26 p.m. #5

Yes, just release both buttons to retaliate.

Posted by abel and viper lover :) on November 12, 2008 at 7:28 p.m. #6

peter, yes u let go of the buttons after a hit. this will perform a hit BUT when u are holding onto the focus buttons, being hit 2 times will cancel the focus attack.

Posted by mosy on November 22, 2008 at 9:19 p.m. #7

is there teching in this game like 3rd strike

Posted by berwyn on January 8, 2009 at 4:42 p.m. #11

as in tech-throwing? yes there is.

Posted by Ichorid on January 10, 2009 at 12:49 a.m. #12

I guess he meant teching as in parrying, in which case no. Although you can still absorb a hit with the FA.

Posted by Anth on January 10, 2009 at 2:22 p.m. #13

when cancelling, i mean say your sagat and you do the uppercut which turns u into yellow (LP + MP) how do you cancel it so you can perform more of a combo. is it the same as focus attack cancelling? dash forward?

Posted by Anth on January 10, 2009 at 2:27 p.m. #14

EX move cancelling i mean

Posted by Qaeoss on January 13, 2009 at 12:03 p.m. #15

Damn, no parrying? I had so much fun with that playing friends in 3S. Oh well, this will still probably grow to be my favourite SF game.

Posted by Jordan on January 17, 2009 at 1:47 a.m. #16

Will the super meter carry over to the next round like in 3s, or is it reset like in super turbo?

Posted by Gief on January 23, 2009 at 6:29 a.m. #17

Im confused about the canceling of focus attacks too.

Can someone please give an example of a scenario?

please and thank you

BY THE WAY THIS IS THE MOST INFORMATIVE SF IV SITE IVE COME ACROSS...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Posted by Teabrewer on January 23, 2009 at 3:32 p.m. #18

super meter carries over while revenge meter does not

Posted by Overon on January 23, 2009 at 5:23 p.m. #19

Most informative SF4 site. Keep going.

Posted by Joedude on January 28, 2009 at 7:07 p.m. #20

Can you tech in Street fighter 4 like in 3rd strike? also is it the same movement you just have to move the joystick foward to tech or parry a move?

Posted by Gt on January 28, 2009 at 10:30 p.m. #21

Can you string together regular punches & kicks like in the alpha series?
Hope to hear from u keep it up!

Posted by evo on January 30, 2009 at 10:58 a.m. #22

How do you defend against a cross-over attack? Am I blocking the wrong way? I just started and some guy killed me by just crossing me up each time I was down... What character would be best against defending a cross-up attack?

Posted by muhahaha on February 3, 2009 at 6:59 p.m. #23

can u still do wake ups?

would be great to know some applications for FADC

Posted by muhahaha on February 3, 2009 at 6:59 p.m. #24

can you still do negative edge/piano rolls?

Posted by chris on February 3, 2009 at 10:23 p.m. #25

If your doing a combo and its medium kick light punch cancel fireball lets say. What does the cancel mean? Any one answer please. It would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by aids on February 4, 2009 at 12:56 a.m. #26

Are throws instant? Do they have start up frames?

Posted by Sakyou on February 6, 2009 at 4:48 p.m. #27

Same question posted by "muhahaha"
Can you do piano rolls?(negative edge)
i need to know, cause i make a lot of my moves with the piano in ST.

Posted by Sunny on February 7, 2009 at 9:32 a.m. #28

an example of FADC is Ryu's uppercut -> opponent sent flying up -> dash cancel -> fireball super

Posted by Blazing Salvo on February 10, 2009 at 11:43 p.m. #29

Blazing Salvo deals 3 damage to target creature unless that creature's controller has Blazing Salvo deal 5 damage to him/her.

Posted by Streg on February 11, 2009 at 6:36 a.m. #30

How in the world do I use supermoves :S

Posted by simpliztic on February 11, 2009 at 5:26 p.m. #31

goddamn it...looks like we really have to get joysticks now cause to perform ultra you need to press all 3 punches/kicks at the same time.

Posted by Sakyou. on February 12, 2009 at 1:21 p.m. #32

You can assign 3punches/kicks in just one button, in the option-control screen. This works in standar controller or fighstick.

Posted by Focus Attack Victim on February 12, 2009 at 8:14 p.m. #33

Let's say you get knocked down and the other guy charges up for a focus attack and times it so that it launches a level 3 right when you get up. Since level 3s are unblockable, aren't you pretty much screwed?

Posted by Simpliztic on February 13, 2009 at 10:46 a.m. #34

@Sakyou

I knew we could do that but even so...most pad players would have those 3 punches/kicks button on the left shoulder(L1,L2) which isnt easy to execute the move esp during combos.

Posted by outforprophets on February 13, 2009 at 12:12 p.m. #35

@Focus Attack Victim:

I'm by no means a pro but I'd imagine that's when using a quick get up (or not) would come in handy.

Is it possible to throw an opponent that's crouching?

Posted by XDism on February 18, 2009 at 12:34 a.m. #43

Your an idiot Plan Ekpo. This site has an assload of info and actually explains all the stuff on SF and shows that it has alot of interesting mechanics that work for high level play as oppose to broken ass MK.

Posted by Plan Ekpo killah on February 18, 2009 at 9:09 a.m. #44

Please tell me that was not a serious comment dude. Mortal combat has nothing on the street fighter franchise. Have you tried MK vs DC? The game that was supposed to "blow sf4 out of the water"? Please. Street fighter will live on for years, while MK will be nothing but a distant memory of the 90's.

If i do a shoryuken with ken, my brother always grabs me if he blocks my shoryuken. is there a way to counter his throw, i tried to press the grab buttons exactly when he does, so is it possible or not. Please need to know ASAP for upcoming tournament. My brother usually plays with Sagat, and he continously does his HK whenever i try to jump and not even my tornado kick can break through. need help!!! Thanks.

Awesome Guide. I plan to pick up the game tomorrow (retailers release it tomorrow here), but I seriously suck at SSFIITHDR on the PSN. Does this game control slightly differently from that game (like is it slower, faster etc). And does it have some form of a tutorial, so that I can actually get better, and would getting a fight stick really improve my ability, or would I still be a crappy fighter. I really want to get good, I tend to lose a lot more than I win on the PSN -__-, any and all help would be appreciated.

Hey Fellow nerds :) i am trying to get the hang of this game, i am a hard core tekken player and whant to be normal + in the street fighter game, i cant c the use of the 3 types of ehh "ALLUCAN!!" Fire balls, why dont we always use the Bigg one havl circel forward and r1!... or the "hepcuanbergen " chopper kicks, why dont we ALWAYS use the best one... in my case halv circle back and R2!, whats the point of the other ones?

Posted by TDizzle on February 20, 2009 at 10:06 a.m. #53

Using the best one usually leaves you vulnerable for a counter attack. If you use the weak version, i.e., light punch for fireballs, light kick for hurricane kick, you will have a better chance of blocking any retaliation the opponent throws at you. It's basically a risk vs. reward concept.

Abel is pretty good with his grabs and throws, I'm trying to discover techniques to stop this really good Abel player that I know, no luck yet.

I dont think my dashing is any good i press forward forward or back back and it does not look like a dsah to me at all

Posted by Chubbstar on February 21, 2009 at 11:24 a.m. #57

TDizzle thx for answer. I have played it hard now to day and know that its more easy to use with combo aswell the light Shoots and spin kicks.
But hard things to do for me is:

1: Do the ultra with Zangeif is Impossibe, i didd it 2 times in one hour and that kinda meens its impossble. I have played tekken longe and are use to hard moves, but 2 full circles?? OMG!!

2: Hard to get the moves right everytime... like ryu, rhe uppercut and the shoot.. kinda hard to get the shoot everytime with out the uppercutt comming! espessially if u are doing it fast like the fire ball directly to the super shoot in combo, the uppercutt always sneeks in!

3: Is there a move that breaks Blankas Electrisity? Like a general move... low kick or somthing?

4: Why do ppl play with Ryu and Ken if u have Akuma.. seems he have the best of both.... ?

Sorry bad english! Hope u understand guys and help me out with some sort of answers :) Love the game btw.. but i whant to be a good og decent player :)

Posted by THEBOYSOSI on February 21, 2009 at 11:44 a.m. #58

how do you block in this game ,just pressing back on the dpad doesnt seem to work im confused or im just retared either way some help would be great !

Posted by jayshwan on February 21, 2009 at 2:22 p.m. #59

Akuma has very little defense, very squishy character that can dropped by a couple of combos from boxer or other heavy hitters.

@theboysosi, have u tried crouch blocking?

Posted by ivan on February 21, 2009 at 3:43 p.m. #60

how do you "cancel" moves???
Help ANYONE!!!

Posted by Ollie on February 22, 2009 at 12:03 p.m. #61

About canceling throws I do find it quite hard to tech against throws so i put throw to one of the front shoulder bumpers (360 controller) that helps but generally I've fund using moves with faster frames rates is quite a god tactic against throws but then again this tactic has proved deeply flawed when not used well.

GamerTag (FlatbushPrince) xbox360

Posted by AliZeroThree on February 23, 2009 at 11:03 a.m. #63

@ IVAN

You can cancel out of focus moves by dashing forward or backwards.

Posted by AliZeroThree on February 23, 2009 at 11:06 a.m. #64

@ Chub

Zangiefs ultra can be easy if you jump in and start the double 360s in the air. When you land you wanna be finishing up the rotation and pressing punch. There are times when you can do it on the ground but it's difficult to do. Hope this helps.

This is just what I have been looking for. Never been much of a street fighter, but I thought this new game should be my new gaming project. Sites like this is a great help.

Keep up the brilliant work. I'm very grateful.

guys does anyone out there know how to parry i think someone called it technic

Posted by jleadership@gmail.com on February 25, 2009 at 4:55 p.m. #67

In street fighter 4 there is only one character that has a parry and thats gouken.

His parry is listed in his move set part of this site.

Why not talk all of these questions and stuff into the forums? It'd be nice to have some more activity in there.

Thanks for all the information guys, this site's been great. I'm having a lot of fun but I'm quite terrible. Hope this isn't too stupid a question, but how do I get priority on moves (i.e. jump roundhouse vs jump roundhouse I'm getting hit probably 75% of the time)?

can someone explain who to do a ulta or super move for Zangrief because i don't understand how to do that i know the buttons but i don't know how to do.

there's written 2 times a stick with the direction but do you have to do that twice or both the sticks? thanx

and what's the best charcter to learn with?

Posted by AndrosX on March 6, 2009 at 12:33 p.m. #75

@Poephole

You have to perform the 360 degrees twice, using the left stick.
It may sound hard but if you try it out you should be able to execute that ultra/super no problem.. try it out in the practice mode.

gonna play this after noon for the first time. Had to catch up on new play mechanics

Posted by shazaa on March 11, 2009 at 6 p.m. #78

okay, this is rediculous, am i the only one who's not getting this. all the ultra attacks have red dots. i understand that the red dots symbolize your joy stick, but when there's two red dots beside each other, one pointing left the next pointing right, do i use both joy sticks? or just one and do the movements quickly. whatever it is, it's retarded the way they placed that, i can't understand at all.

Posted by ove on March 12, 2009 at 4:23 p.m. #79

I agree to everybody who's having a problem understanding the manual or in game move menu. To begin with some of the text in the game (e.g. sagat's fake kick) is so small that I can hardly read it on my 42" hdtv, that's bad capcom! Further the description of the moves is in general to brief.

@ shazaa
I guess you'r refering to ultras like chun-li's or blanka's? In that case you execute the moves just like a regular sonic boom or knee press. Charge (hold back for 2 seconds) than press rapidly forth, and in the ultras/supers press rapidly back and forth again, and than press the hit button.

@ Poephole
To perform an atomic buster you have to circle the left control stick twice. The easiest way to do this is to execute the move in the air while jumping towards your opponent pressing the punch button when hitting the ground. Remeber that you only have to circle the control stick 540 degrees even though it says 720 in the manual, knowing that makes the move a hell lot easier to perform! Answering your question which character is the best to learn with I would say sagat. He has good reach, his moves takes a lot of damage, he has good stamina and lacks greater weaknesses.

I end this contribution with a question of my own. What is a cross-over or cross-up attac?

Posted by Oculus-Orbis on March 18, 2009 at 9:15 p.m. #80

One very important -and strangely overlooked- thing I think deserves to be mentioned....
"PRESS/RELEASE" as opposed to "Tap"
Ever since SF2(ww), you can complete a command special by RELEASING the required button instead of tapping, after the command input.
e.g. Ryu's Crouching HP cancel into HP Hadouken:
D+(press)HP, D-F, F+(release)HP

this is an integral part of my playing style which surprisingly, many don't even realize.

Posted by Oculus-Orbis on March 18, 2009 at 9:42 p.m. #81

Sorry about the double-post,
As it turns out, the technique I mentioned is now called:
"Negative Edge" (I'm officially "out of the loop")LOL
Anyone who doesn't know of this, needs to.
And yes, they are still usable in SFIV(those who were asking).

Good work

Posted by gamer girlfriend on March 21, 2009 at 12:52 a.m. #83

What is the difference between the U, V, and C wins? I know the U is ultra, right? And the V is a victory, but what is the C? Does it mean comeback?

Posted by PumpkinBomber on March 21, 2009 at 4:16 a.m. #84

C is a Chip win. You chipped away at your opponent while they blocked. There are also titles u can unlock if you get enough "chip" medals from online play.

Posted by Oculus-Orbis on March 21, 2009 at 9:23 p.m. #85

C Also known as cheesy (mostly due to the big piece-o-cheese icon in the alpha series).

Posted by Metzhara on March 21, 2009 at 11:23 p.m. #86

While this isn't overly illuminating, I gotta say it is very well written. For people who are new to the series (like myself) that had to dig into the light manual only to find nothing, this can piece together some of the holes.
On it's own, I might say this is good, but used in conjuncture with the manual, and I'll say you did a fantastic job elaborating on the games simpler mechanics.

Thank you for giving the "New Warriors" a chance to get in on the action. If it weren't for new people in the game, the series would eventually die out. This message goes out to those who play online and grief the hell out of newbies. Not everyone lives and breathes SF, so give them a chance. Teach and maybe you too can learn something.

i need some one to explain to me in detail how to cancel and what does it mean

Posted by Mr Tetley on March 30, 2009 at 3:38 p.m. #93

Excellent site. Thank you from someone who is just getting into sf4. Was also wondering if someone could explain 'cancelling' to me. I understand how to cancel a focus attack but on some Combo guides it talks about e.g cancelling into a fireball even when a focus attack hasn't been used. Can you cancel any form of attack to allow another quick attack? Apologies if this is a really stupid question.

Thanks
Mr tetley

You forgot to mention: Weak focus attacks crumple when they counter hit.

does a shoryuken quickly cancels it, dash and then super/ultra.

how does one cancel a shoryuken?
same goes with abel, he does qcf+P, cancel dash and down-HP.

Ok in fear of sounding like a total noob. When trying to do supers and ultras, it just does a regular special for super and an EX special for ultras. Example is EX Dragon Punch for Ken's ultra. I know its a timing issue or something but come on...

I really loving this game, I have been dominating my freinds for a while untill some one learned how to crossover and get behind my block. Now im mostly lossing! How in the world can i even the odds and Is ken the only person with a affecting crossover using medium kick! i use ryu and I cant find a good crossover I need help. HOW DO YOU DEFEND AGAINST CROSSOVERS???

Posted by Oculus-Orbis on April 23, 2009 at 3:56 p.m. #101

To defend against crossovers, you have to block high by pressing FORWARD(not back). Because at the time of the hit, they are on the other side of you. Many of the characters can perform crossovers, some just use different attacks(Ryu can do a MK crossover as well).

The most powerful technique in SF4 is the Focus Attack Dash Cancel. A long and thorough post regarding this would be helpful. Especially how to cancel fireball and dragon uppercuts. How I cancel a fireball is to do a medium punch fireball but after you tap medium punch immediately tap MP and MK together while tapping forward then release the buttons. What you have done is performed the fireball then canceled it so you are free to move and chase your fireball or conduct another move.

Whenever you have someone who Focus Attacks you when you get of the ground, that's always a good time to use your super or ultra attack. 99% of the times there to late to dash out of it! And you'r super/ultra goes through the Focus attack.

Posted by Peacecraft on May 23, 2009 at 7:57 a.m. #104

I just read somewhere, that the back dash has some invincibility frames. I tested this and it's true. It seems to be a little thing, but can be extremly useful.

Hi guys I have huge problems. When I look at the Move List of my character and then look at for example super combos. It gives me all these weird signs and things like that. You know the circel and the fist and kick icon. I know what they mean but Iam NEVER! (note NEVER) able to execute a ultra or supercombo or any of the other combos! I dont get it and its starting to really piss me off! Help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone could tell me how to do the super and ultra combos with Ken thanks alot. ken is the guy im specializing on. Pease help. Because if i at some point dont get to manage these stupid combos i will feel like 30 pounds was a huge waste of money!
THANKS!

SF4 PC Version slow motion cheat: run folding at home GPU client then run the game. The game fps will slow down to 30fps or lower, (fyi, 60fps is the standard speed.) and you can play the game in slow motion. depends really on what card you have and the graphics settings you use.

Posted by atze on July 5, 2009 at 9:43 a.m. #111

lol, thats no cheat man. the game is just slowing down because the system is under heavy pressure. if u got a weak system u can just put on some AA/AF and the game will slow down very hard.

Great site!
I know the basic moves and usually play Sagat. Tiger shot, Tiger Knee or whatever are all good but I keep getting whipped by Guile and the new masked wrestler, and I mean whipped. Whenever he gets close Guile flash kicks and combos and the wrestler dude did the same.
What are the best defensive moves until I get combos and "juggle" moves better?????????
Any help would be appreciated so I can go back and kick his ass!

Oe! Must say... The 3D rox... I used to play 2D fighters: SFalpha1, KoF and Capcom vs Snk2.. SF4 is way cool, can't wait for KoF12 and Blazblu... Am SO glad Rose is in, shes my absolute fav.. Wish Charlie, Guy, Sodom, Maki, Eagle and Rolento were also in...

Posted by Sean aka Flesh.Turned.Stone on August 11, 2009 at 4:27 a.m. #123

I forgot to add.. I just got SF4 yesterday on pc.. Yes pc. Most of the moves are quite easy to perform.. Except for 2... The double 360 circle moves are virtualy impossible.. And, although they're do-able, the diagonle charge triangle moves(like Vega's super) are very hard to pull off in the heat of combat.. I don't suppose theres an easier way to perform these moves on keyboard... ANY suggestions? I would be eternally greatful.. Btw Akuma sucks and Rose rules!!

Here's a trick for u guys who strugle to execute ultra combos with the 3x buttons. You can switch the 3x punch/kick buttons from left shoulders (LB/LT in Xbox 360 and L1/L2 in PS3) to the buttons u have the high blows. I have always do that in SF games but now I think Capcom took this little trick into consideration and changed the blow that comes out when u single press 3x buttons to the high ones and not more the weak ones. With that u can stil have this trick enabled when playing with chars that have 3x special moves like Vega, Bison, Balrog and Zangief and, as a plus, u will have to press only one button to execute EX moves. More pros the cons in this version using this trick. The cons? U can imagine it, can't u?

You can also get up faster by pressing two attack buttons instead of pressing down which can be useful for charge-characters

Posted by FADC on November 10, 2009 at 8:04 a.m. #127

You don't have to hold MK and MP to FADC. Just press MK and MP once and dash to cancel.

Thank you so much for this guide! It's so useful! I've started playing this in the arcade a few weeks in Japan (I'm now staying in Fukuoka till next month) and I haven't got a clue how to play.

Thanks to the site, I know how to use the basic. I'm going to the arcade after Japanese school (or before) and give this game another go.

Yo, I can do focu attack (crumpling), FADC. But how can you do a EX FA or EX FADC

Posted by joe on January 12, 2010 at 2:12 p.m. #130

do you have a video that you can show us how to do the FADC.

Posted by Sfighter on January 19, 2010 at 5:03 a.m. #131

when you do the focus(you must hold the two buttons pressed),
just do the dash(forward, forward, and if you want u can do ultra or super or any other regular move). And thats how you cancel FOCUS!!!!

Posted by Ryu on February 24, 2010 at 8:28 a.m. #132

Why is timing for special move cancel changed after 2 hit combo but not for 1 hit? It's annoying.
